New  Volunteer Connect  has arrived!

2017 has b een a year with incredible changes for Ashby Village:  new location, new staff, new logo.  We are pleased to announce that we've launched one more!

We have spent the last few months creating an exclusive new tool called Volunteer Connect (VC) to replace the one volunteers have been using for the past 18 months. VC enables volunteers to access and select services they'd like to help members with, report hours if you work on a program, team or committee and much more!

Coming soon! Features of this tool will  enable members to get notification when their requests have been accepted!

Ashby Village's New Look

People often assume that Ashby Village is a "bricks and mortar"
neighborhood; but those who know us realize that it is a lot more than that.  Ashby Village is a community that is re-writing the book on aging!

The new look replaces our rooftop logo and adds content that illustrates our community's innovative approach to connecting people and neighborhoods to support each other to live vital lives as we grow older.

Check out the new look of our website!

When she joined Ashby Village, Mairin Malarka Meyer was not expecting such a warm welcome.

Looking back on her own reasons for joining, she remembers thinking "maybe I could be helpful to others."  As it turned out, "I got much more than I gave."

Record Turn Out for Arts & Culture's Arlie Russell Hochschild Talk

On the sunniest Sunday in weeks, why would Berkeley's Ashby Village (AV) community turn out, 200 strong, to stay inside and listen to a distinguished sociologist describe what she learned in a 5-year intensive study of Tea Party supporters?

EMERY BUNCH

Begun in 2012, Emery Bunch (EB) is one of our first neighborhood groups, and it currently counts 40 members and volunteers on its roster. The group includes Emeryville and surrounding areas of Oakland. It has evolved into a very active subgroup of the greater village that offers a multitude of interesting and diverse activities and opportunities for enjoyment, stimulation, and building friendships.

Wouldn't you like to have similar opportunities in your own neighborhood? The Neighborhood Group Council (NGC) is looking for interested Ashby Village members and volunteers who are willing to work towards making that happen.

If you interested, please contact NGC members Beth Burnside, burnside@berkeley.edu, (510) 527-6308 or Sam Foushee, slfoushee@comcast.net, (510) 393-6749.

The Science interest group is in the process of getting organized. Its purpose is to study and discuss current issues in Science which excite us either by their scientific merit or by their influence on society; we will also plan activities for the greater Ashby Village membership to help them make sense of topics making headlines in today's news.

If you are interested in participating in this Forum, please contact Ashby Village member Gerry Abrams.

Jean Myer Radford

Jean Myer Radford died on January 19th of this year, the day before the inauguration of the 45th president, whom she did not vote for. She was 86 years young, born on May 6, 1930. She spent the first 85 years of her life in the East Bay and the last nine months in Sutter Creek, California. A Celebration of Life in her memory was held on March 11, 2017, at the First Presbyterian Church.

Jean was the daughter of Arthur "Pi" Myer (of Boy Scout Troop 17) and Ethel Levy Myer. Jean was a fourth generation Californian. She had four children and is survived by all of them: Arthur Radford, Marie Radford Elliott and her husband, Ross Elliott, Andy Radford and his wife, Amy Hagen, and Beth Radford Haddorff. She has seven grandchildren: Perry Radford, Steven Elliott, Margaret Burnett and her husband, Joel Burnett, Becca Elliott, Michael Haddorff, Holly Radford, and Ben Radford. She has one great granddaughter, Ruby Jean. She is also survived by her sister, Barbara Myer Klein. Jean was preceded in death by her son-in-law Kim, granddaughter Martha Jean, and many beloved family members and friends.

Jean was adored by everyone who knew her. She loved her family and loved meeting new people. She made new friends everywhere she went.

Jean was raised in Berkeley. She graduated from Berkeley High in 1948 and from Stanford in 1952. She received her teaching credential at Cal State East Bay. She taught music in the Oakland Public Schools for 30 years, including Claremont, Joaquin Miller, Montera, Jefferson, Emerson, Washington, Burckhalter, Golden Gate, and West Lake. She consulted with Holy Names College and Piedmont Schools in their music programs. She played in the Oakland Civic, Holy Names, Berkeley Free, and Prometheus Orchestras. She loved chamber music and playing viola, violin, and piano. Her main interest in life, after her children and their families, was music.

Jean also worked as a social worker for Alameda County, with the Oakland Symphony, and with the US Forest Service. She loved to travel. New Zealand had a special place in her heart.

Contributions in her memory may be sent to the Sierra Club, (415) 977-5653, or the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony, 1330 State St. Suite 102, Santa Barbara, CA 93101.
