National Volunteer Week - April 23-29, 2017

Message from the Nutrition Director, Julia Martiros:

Elder Services of Worcester has 375 Volunteers who serve Seniors in our community by providing healthy meals and a friendly face through our Meals on Wheels and Congregate Dining Program.  Every year we take the opportunity to thank them during April, National Volunteer Recognition Month.  These words cannot express the gratitude we have for all the hard work you do.  In a time where there are many unknowns, it is more important than ever to give thanks and appreciation to our self-less volunteers, without whom we would not be able to fulfill our mission of keeping seniors at home for as long and as safely as possible.  I humbly thank you for every meal you serve, every smile you give, and every life you touch through your service in our community.

Elder Care Q&A - April 2017 - Getting Older, Staying In Shape

Q: As I get older, does it really matter to stay physically active?

A: Absolutely. No matter your health and physical abilities, you can gain a lot by staying active. There are many benefits from physical activity:

  • maintains and improves your physical strength and fitness.
  • improves your ability to do the everyday things you want to do.
  • improves your balance.
  • manages and improves diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and osteoporosis.
  • reduces feelings of depression and may improve mood and overall well-being.
  • improves your ability to shift quickly between tasks, plan an activity, and stay focused.

If you feel out of shape--but want to remain physically active--the key to success is to build up slowly from your current fitness level, according to the National Institute On Aging.
