Dean's Message:

Friday evening’s Scholarships & Awards Ceremony was a success as over $105,000 resulted in approximately 90 scholarship awards. The evening was also marked by faculty receiving well-deserved awards of excellence: Hawthorne Distinguished Faculty Award: David Karle; Two awards for Excellence in Teaching: Dr. Yunwoo Nam and Sarah Karle; Excellence in Outreach & Engagement: Jason Griffiths; and for Excellence in Research: Dr. Zhenghong Tang.

The ceremony and reception capped off a fruitful day of discussion with our Professional Advisory Council (PAC).

As we enter these final few weeks of the semester, I encourage you to put your focus to “finishing strong” and to that end, to take good care of yourself as well. Eat nutritiously, sleep well (even if not long), and get some fresh air and exercise as these investments in yourself will not detract from your work; but rather, will make your thoughts and resulting actions even better.

-Kathy Ankerson

ADVISING CORNER

Last Day to Withdraw From a Course

The Advising Staff would like to remind faculty and students that the last day to WITHDRAW from one or more full semester courses for spring 2017 is Friday, April 7th.

A few things you should know about “Withdrawing” from a course include: ·NEVER withdraw from a course without checking with your adviser first.

·Be sure to discuss with Scholarships and Financial Aid the impact withdrawing will have on your scholarships and aid packages.

·Be sure to discuss with University Housing how withdrawing may impact your housing eligibility.

·If your full-time or part-time enrollment is verified to receive discounts on your medical/car insurance or your parents’ health and auto insurance, withdrawing from classes may affect your eligibility for continued discounts.

If you have questions about withdrawing from a course, please stop in and see me.

INTERIOR DESIGN

A congratulations goes out to Assistant Professor Nate Bicak. Nate received a Layman Grant Award to support his research on makerspaces. Bicak is interested in looking at “making” and establishing developmental strategies and design criteria of makerspaces as an emerging interior space typology. We recently have seen “making” evolve as a sub-cultural movement to a mainstream mindset and while makerspaces have grown in popularity, there has been limited research on best practices. More-
