Lisa and Sophia have spent the last four summers at Camp Friendship strengthening their mother-daughter bond.
"It's nice for us to have that time just focusing on each other," said Lisa.
Sophia and her mother have a very tight relationship that only deepens while they are at camp. They experience new adventures together such as tubing on the lake or tie-dying in arts and crafts.
Sophia's favorite thing to do at camp is to visit George
in the music room, who is a long-time Camp Friendship favorite due to his musical talents.
Sophia has trouble seeing and speaking, so she relies mostly on her hearing.
"She understands everything she hears, it's just harder to get it out," Lisa explains. "This is why Sophia loves all of the camp songs and visits the music room so often."
Her counselors will often sing camp songs or stop by the music room to keep Sophia involved.
"We call Camp Friendship the land where everybody wants to make Sophia happy," Lisa said with a smile.
Outside of camp, Sophia and her mom love to go to dance classes and ride bikes with Sophia's sister, Ruby, and dad, Michael. Sophia is also quite interested in learning new languages. She has learned to understand Spanish, Russian and English. Lisa is very proud of Sophia and loves her more than anything.
"She has a very positive, patient outlook on life," said Lisa. "Her positiveness rubs off on everyone in the family."
Family Camp weekends in 2017 are planned for August 6 - 11 and October 27 - 29. To learn more check out the
