Legislative Corner

In February, two hearings were held in NYC and Albany for the purpose of examining the growing need for home care and personal care, and to examine the obstacles to recruiting, employing and retaining and adequate home care workforce

Home care allows an individual to receive important health care and personal services which allow them to continue to live independently in the community. There is a growing need for home care services for the elderly, people with disabilities, and chronically ill. However, advocates have expressed concerns that there is a shortage of home care workers and that communities across New York State have waitlists for these services. This means many patients receive fewer hours of care per week than needed, go without services, or move to institutional care.

Appropriations Alert Seeking support from House and Senate for $5 million for Lifespan Respite in FY 2017

National Lifespan Respite Grantees Making a Difference :

This small amount of funding is allowing grantees to build coordinated systems of respitefor all family caregivers and to expand respite to family caregivers who often fall through the cracks.



Grantees are delivering services and helping families pay for respite, especially for those caring for someone between the ages of 18-60, including adults with MS, ALS or I/DD

This new program will fund non-profits across the United States that provide episodic respite care services to families living with paralysis.

BROOKDALE RELATIVES AS PARENTS PROGRAM (RAPP)-Seed Grants Available for the Creation or Expansion of Supportive Services to Grandparents and Other Relatives Raising Children

The Brookdale Foundation Group has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the creation or expansion of supportive services to grandparents and other relatives raising children. Up to 15 programs will be selected to receive a seed grant of $15,000 ($10,000 and $5,000 respectively), contingent upon progress made during year one and potential for continuity in the future. On-going technical assistance will also be provided. Any 501 (c)(3) or equivalent not-for-profit organizations can apply. The RFP proposal and guidelines can be downloaded by visiting the website.
