March 2017 News & Notes
SHARP and Urgent Care Applications Open April 3, 2017
For City of Syracuse homeowners who need to make repairs to their home, both the SHARP grant and Urgent Care Loan programs will open on April 3, 2017. Both programs require that homeowners are income-eligible, current on property taxes and water bills and for SHARP, not have received a grant in 2016.

SHARP grants offer up to $1,000 for minor exterior home repairs and can help address code violations such as painting, step replacement and sidewalk repair. The Urgent Care program provides up to $20,000 for emergency repairs like leaking roofs, sewage back up, code violations and other life/safety issues. Based on household income, most of the loan may be permanently deferred (not paid back).

The funding for these programs is made possible though the City of Syracuse and the Community Development Block Grant program. Since 2007, more than $54 million in CDBG funding has been allocated to Syracuse from the U.S. Department of HUD to support emergency home repair for fixed-income seniors and low-income families, and home purchase assistance and housing counseling for first-time home buyers.

2017 Block Blitz - Southside

This year's Block Blitz on Thursday, Sept. 14, will be held somewhere on Syracuse's Southside--and we're looking for your input! Do you have ideas for the perfect location? Do you live or work on the Southside and see the same couple of blocks that could use a little attention from a hundred or more volunteers?

If we receive enough interest in two to four areas on the Southside, those areas or blocks will then compete through Southside TNT to see which block area will be the final location for the one-day Blitz.

What makes a block area great for a Block Blitz?
  • A majority of homeowners
  • Manageable projects (a good mix of small and large projects that all types of volunteers can tackle)
  • A mix of mostly residential properties with some businesses locations
  • A staging area like a park or vacant lot
Let us know what YOU think! Email Southside Block Blitz location ideas to: 2017BlockBlitz!
Meet Miguel Goodlin-Saenz

The new friendly face of housing counseling over at Home HeadQuarters' HomeOwnership Center is Miguel Goodlin-Saenz. Miguel is a 2016 LeMoyne College graduate (Mr. Overachiever with a triple major) and a lifelong resident of Syracuse. His parents are thrilled he is staying in the area which he told us was easy to do once he realized one of his "top of the list" non-profits was looking for a housing counselor.

Miguel will be teaching homeownership workshops, conducting joint foreclosure consultations along with Legal Services and Hiscock Legal Aid and providing general foreclosure counseling and support to the HomeOwnership Center staff.

Home HeadQuarters' Before and After

Here's a property in Syracuse's Lincoln Hill neighborhood on Sherwood Avenue that needed a little (?!) TLC. Home HeadQuarters acquired the property from the Greater Syracuse Landbank, fully rehabbed it and then sold the home to a new homeowner. Since 1996, Home HeadQuarters has redeveloped more than 800 properties in the city of Syracuse.
