THOUGHT EXERCISE
In the fifth session of our "Designing Your Encore" workshop (after many exercises to explore and free up our minds in the previous weeks), here is one question we asked: what would you do if the idea you have now for your life was no longer an option?

We each drew a five year timeline of what that might look like. We had fun with it and didn't worry about whether it was realistic.

In the fifth year of my timeline, I was interviewed by Terry Gross, on her radio program, "Fresh Air." I have had this fantasy many times before. But in this version, I am interviewed for the play that I have written that has gained some notoriety. In past fantasies, I am Terry Gross, interviewing interesting people about their work. Perhaps you have had a similar fantasy about a show you watch or listen to regularly.

This has been fun to think about and now I am looking at the steps that might (I can dream, can't I?) get me there. Keep working on the play. Take a class in play writing. Write another play. Read lots of plays. Go see lots of plays. Talk with other playwrights. You get the idea.

What might you do/how might you live your life if your current scenario were no longer an option?

The workshop uses as its framework the book, Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful Life, by Bill Burnett & Dave Evans.

Some of the questions we will answer in the workshop include:
  • What's next for me in my work/life?
  • What action might I take to kick my life up a notch?
  • How might I make a larger contribution in my community?
  • How do I meet people who might be interested in my ideas or from whom I may learn?
In a small group, we'll explore these questions and more. We will have fun. We will be inspired and challenged. We will be curious together. The experience just might change your life.
