Do you have machines that you talk to? I do - I talk to my laptops and printers all the time.
Do they talk back to you? YES, mine do - they seem to always be telling me what to do, especially when I want to do something else. My newest printer is very good at telling me when and when not to remove the paper from the tray as it is being printed. Seems like they want the last word.
Does this happen to you in life as well? How about when you are texting or on a social media site? Do you often have difficulty ending the session? Who ends it? Who gets the last word? You say goodbye and someone else sends you an emoji; you send one back and so on and so on...

Community caring and sharing
Close to one million metro Detroiters were without power for almost a week due to a severe windstorm. Epic Church, Shelby Township, MI, took to the streets of their local community, bringing non-perishable food items to residents without power.

Care packages
The St. Michael, Ft. Wayne, IN, community donated over 2,000 items that were put into 125 care packages this past Sunday for people in need.

Walk to Wittenberg
In honor of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, the congregation of First Lutheran Church, El Cajon, CA, will be embarking on a 5000+ mile "Walk to Wittenberg." How?? Sue Neff, RN, Parish Nurse, explains: As a congregation, from April 2, 2017 to June 30, 2017, they will log their miles walked, and compile them each week as they "Walk to Wittenberg." In addition to learning about points of interest along the way, they
will develop healthy habits. The entire congregation and preschool are encouraged to be involved. For those who cannot walk, they are asked to offer prayer support for the walkers. The church is also asking that other English District congregations include their walk in your prayers for the months of April, May, and June.

Learning to Serve
Rev. David Thiele led a class on serving our neighbors at a MissionInsite seminar at Epic Church, Shelby Township, MI. "Compassion starts with a passion for people," Dave Thiele explained to the group gathered.

Lending a hand
Members of the 2017 Grace Lutheran, Wyoming, MI Haiti Mission Team gave a video presentation and answered questions during Adult Bible Study Hour before 75 members of the
congregation on Sunday, March 12, 2017. The ten member team traveled to Haiti from January 12-20, 2017. Grace members have embarked on this mission trip every two years for the past eight years. This year's team consisted of
Grace members Bob Weaver (4th trip), Tom Hoffman (3rd trip), Phyllis Neitzel (3rd trip), Christine Meaney (
video producer, 2nd trip), Staci Weaver (2nd trip), and Beth Cronkright (1st trip). They were also accompanied by Dan Hopkins (3rd trip), Kelly VanVliet (2nd trip), William Ennis (1st trip) and Luke Sheler (1st trip).
Every mission trip has unique projects to complete. This trip included teaching the
Haiti teachers hands-on lessons and providing
them with continuing education credits, building screens for 25
school windows, distributing vitamins
daily to over 400 students at two schools, installing clothes hangers and shelves with Biblical messages,
putting in door stops and
making other repairs as neededdue to Hurricane Matthew. A great deal of time was spent with the children and sharing the love of Jesus in a personal manner. The
video presentation was not only informative and inspirational but also served to recruit more people for the next trip in two years.

Professional Church Workers Conference and More!
|
|
The theme of this year's Professional Church Workers conference is "Loving Your Neighbor: Even if they are unlovable." The key note speaker will be The Rev. Dr. Lawrence R. Rast, Jr., president of Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana, and professor of American Christianity and American Lutheranism. Also presenting will be The Rev. Allan Buss, Senior Pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Belvidere, IL and The Rev. Dr. John A. Nunes, president of Concordia College-New York. We are excited about the opportunity to gather together to worship, learn, and fellowship in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Supporting church workers is a priority for the English District, LCMS, and we continue to work to increase the amount of funding available for students to pursue a ministry career. The first time you apply for aid, there are two forms to complete: the
District Financial Aid Application and the
Financial Aid Information Form.
Grants are given to applicants enrolled in synodical-approved church work programs (pastor, teacher, DCE, DCO, deaconess, etc.). Grants are not given to interns, vicars, or graduate students. There is a separate
Colloquy Financial Aid Application for colloquy students.
Please read the
Financial Aid Instructions before completing the forms. The deadline for submission of English District financial aid applications is June 1, 2017.

That's a question.
Who? Me? Sometimes we don't know what we can do until someone asks us.
The English District sent a team to Hong Kong/China in December to explore what we might be able to do in response to a call from China to serve our Lord there.
Three types of opportunities exist:
- School teachers at an international school
- Young men and women, often post-college (called "GEO Missionaries"), living amongst and interacting with school-aged children in a variety of Lutheran school/church settings
- Short-term mission teams (think VBS, or other 1-2 week programs geared around helping our Chinese Lutheran sister congregations reach more people through the English language).
We can turn the opening headline into a word of encouragement, and give you something to consider:
Serve the Lord in China!
