PEN AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE ADDS WE INITIATIVE
The Peninsula High School Environmental Science AP Program has been selected to participate in the new College Board AP with WE Initiative. Environmental Science teacher Ben Smith applied to the program in early January. Ben's experience teaching the course (Peninsula HS was one of the first schools in the country to offer ENV SCI AP starting in the 1996 pilot year) and prior community / outdoor service learning endeavors with his students were factors in our selection.

By combining the academic challenge and rigor of Advanced Placement® with WE's education and citizenship model, AP with WE Service creates an opportunity for students to further consider their classroom work and how it applies to the real world, while working closely with their peers to address social issues.

Students who participate in service learning within the WE framework apply their academic learning to real-life settings and situations by being active in meaningful community-based service. In addition, they work on problems that build on and reinforce academic learning, making it even more relevant, while enhancing their leadership and social skills, analytic ability, sense of stewardship, and civic responsibility.

The incorporation of hands-on fieldservice-learning projects is something that Peninsula High School Environmental Science AP students have been involved in since the course began, with projects ranging from restorative field work at Ballona Wetlands, PVP Land Conservancy Preserves, local beaches, and Joshua Tree National Park.

The AP with WE Service component will provide an empowering opportunity for Environmental Science AP students at Peninsula to become leaders and agents of change.   https://advancesinap.collegeboard.org/initiatives/ap-we-service/how-it-works

MODEL UNITED NATIONS AT GEORGETOWN
Over 3,500 delegates from 190+ high schools all over the nation and 19 countries including China, Mexico, UK and Denmark came together in Washington, DC for the North American Invitational Model United Nations Conference (NAIMUN) hosted by Georgetown University. The Washington Hilton was buzzing from February 16th to February 19th, with delegates participating in 39 innovative committees.

Student Delegates were challenged to come up with unique and creative ways to resolve international problems. Some committees were assigned more specific tasks in Board Rooms, Councils and NSA & CIA committees.  Students participated in the "Uber Board of Directors Committee"  and established tribal governance in the unique, "Iroquoi Confederacy Committee."  Obstacles & crises were created to challenge students as members of the "British House of Commons Committee" and the underlying international crime in the "INTERPOL Committee."  Some delegates were even challenged by unique "crisis committees" called on after committee hours to effectively solve the pending crises!  In addition, Georgetown held numerous activities, ranging from a "Hilltop Madness Social" with performances from choral and dance groups to the traditional delegate dance. Our delegates got a chance to tour the Capitol and see a session of Congress as well as many of the historical monuments of the city.
A special thank you goes out to Peninsula MUN Alum, Bethan Saunders who is now a Senior at Georgetown and Executive Director of the NAIMUN Conference. Bethan was able to discuss opportunities for students wishing to go to Georgetown and pursuing internships and careers in the Global Arena.

Following are the awards won at the NAIMUN Conference:

DRAMA GALA
Last night I had the pleasure of attending the annual Drama Gala.  Thank you to the Drama Boosters for coordinating this wonderful event that showcases our talented students. The Lemonade Stand was the perfect setting for a fabulous dinner catered by the Depot and yummy desserts made by Mr. Barri.  After dinner, our talented students performed for all those in attendance.  The audience was also treated to a sampling of Comedy Sportz and enjoyed a scene from the Music Man which will open on March 17.

On a personal note, thank you to the Drama Boosters for acknowledging my love of theatre and support for our Peninsula High Drama program.  Receiving the Peny Award was truly an honor.   I am so proud of our incredible drama program under the direction of Pen grad, Seth Cohen.

NATIONAL SCIENCE OCEAN BOWL COMPETITION
On Saturday, February 25, 2017, the PVPHS OCEAN SCIENCE BOWL TEAM participated in the annual competition at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. The team was led by the president  Regina Lee. Other members included Cindy Shim, Karyn Young, Krislyn Jobes, Kathleen Verendia, Minami Yamaura, Jack Jobes, and Ryan Alimento.  Our team won the "Sportsmanship Award" for the very first time!!  Our team was a class act throughout the entire competition.  In one of the matches, our team lost by one point.  In this particular match, our team was very gracious toward the other team in congratulating them.  The judges noticed this and awarded our team with the "Sportsmanship Award" at the competition.
Ocean Bowl

The  National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) competition is a nationally recognized and highly acclaimed high school academic competition that provides a forum for talented students to test their knowledge of the marine sciences. The competition encourages students to learn more about the oceans and to raise public understanding of the national investment in ocean-related research. About 2,000 students from more than 300 high schools nationwide participate in this academic competition every year, answering questions about biology, chemistry, geology and physics of the oceans, as well as navigation, geography and related history and literature.

The theme for the 2016 competition was "Our Changing Ocean: Science for Strong Coastal Communities."  The theme encouraged understanding of the science needed to sustain community awareness.  Our school's team was absolutely fantastic this year.  After competing in several exciting nail-biting preliminary rounds, our school team made it into the playoff rounds in the afternoon!  The team played very competitively in the afternoon rounds.  Our team learned so much this year and is now preparing for next year's competition. Our team members were also able to interact with the JPL's scientists, staff, and students from other high schools. The whole team is very excited to be coming back next year!  We are so proud of every member of our team!

SOCIETY OF PROGRESSIVE ENGINEERS
On February 22, two speakers from Northrop Grumman, Tom Priest and Peninsula Alum Jaqueline Herriage, came to speak about their experiences working in materials engineering. Mr. Priest, a material engineer for Northrop, works mainly with composites and the development of them. He talked about his experiences in both the fields of aerospace and shipbuilding and how materials engineering is about the tradeoff between density, strength, and cost. Mr. Priest brought in samples of these composites, explaining how they are fabricated, tested, and their purpose. Ms. Herriage gave insight into her experiences ranging from choosing which college to attend to how she helped solve an emergency situation concerning the radio receiver for a satellite. She then spoke about the James Webb Space Telescope; the telescope plans to be launched in 2018 and the technology surpasses the Hubble telescope which is currently the main source of information for scientists. The students were very fortunate to hear about Mr. Priest's and Ms. Herriage's experiences working in the aerospace field and would like to thank them for taking the time out of their day to talk to the students.

PEN TEAM VISITS SAN FRANCISCO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
On Monday, February 27, Principal Mitzi Cress, Associate Principals Micah Farrell & Michael Wanmer, School Psychologist Ilana Stoll, and Safe School Counselor Christine Lopez, spent that day visiting San Francisco Unified School District.  The State of California has recognized SFUSD for having the best wellness support programs in the State.  After meeting with the district coordinator of their Wellness Project, we visited Lowell and Wallenberg High Schools.
We returned with wonderful ideas that will be incorporated into the planned Peninsula High "Student Center" and "Wellness Garden."

On Tuesday, February 28, the Principal's Advisory Council reviewed the various plans brought back from the SFUSD visit and offered some great suggestions for the Student Center.

On Wednesday, March 8, Associate Principal Micah Farrell will give a Board presentation on the 2016-2017 Peninsula High Wellness Initiative.
