Principal's Message
Parents,
Report cards go home TODAY. Please sign and return the envelope to your child's teacher so they know you have received this important communication.
As you know, each month I address attendance and March is such a great month for learning because we have students in school all month with no diversion from the schedule. This month, I asked students from Mrs. Rosenstrauch's Second Grade, " I don't want to miss school because then I will miss..."
Here are their answers:
- Kareem "Learning math and subtracting!"
- Diya, "All the fun things Mrs. Rosenstrauch teaches, like math and art!"
- Tony, "Art and my favorite, Read to Someone."
- Logan, "Reading and after school activities!"
- Alex, "Math, Art, Reading and Writing!"
- Odgerel, "All the fun at Murwood!"
Did you know that students suffer academically if they miss 10% or more of school days? Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks.
Understandably, students will get sick sometimes and need to stay home. The important thing is to get to school as often as possible to help stay on track with assignments.
Communication Tools/Strategies for Parents:

Getting your child to school on-time, every day, unless they are sick, is something that parents can do to ensure their child has a chance to succeed in school. While others can help, parents are the bottom line.

- Come up with back up plans for who to turn to (another family member, a neighbor or fellow parents) to help you get your child to school if something comes up (e.g. another child gets sick, your car breaks down, etc.).
- Reach out for help if you are experiencing tough times (e.g. transportation, unstable housing, loss of a job, health problems) that make it difficult to get your child to school. Other parents, your child's teacher, principal, social worker, school nurse, afterschool providers or community agencies can help you problem solve or connect you to a needed resource.
- If your child is absent, work with the teacher to make sure she or he has an opportunity to learn and make up for the academics missed.
- Establish and stick to the basic routines (going to bed early, waking up on time, etc.) that will help your child develop the habit of on-time attendance.
- Talk to your child about why going to school every day is critical and important unless they are sick. If your child seems reluctant to go to school, find out why and work with the teacher, administrator or after school provider to get them excited about going to school.

From the Office
The trend of students that are looking for snacks in the mornings is increasing again. Please make sure your children are getting a good breakfast (always include protein!) before they head off to school. If your mornings are rushed, try keeping some 'grab and go' items in your pantry...things like string cheese, granola bars, whole grain toaster waffles or toast with nut/soy butter, trail mix, fruit, and hard-boiled eggs are just a few great options. Also be sure to pack a healthy snack for them or, better yet, have your child pack snacks (grown-up approved, of course) in their backpack as they get their things ready for school the night before.

Thank you to all the children and families who participated in the Science Fair this year. We had an amazing turnout for the last week! It is amazing how excited the kids were to participate, even while just looking at the projects!!!

Murwood Auction for Education Information
Tickets for The Murwood PTA's Auction for Education are still available but we need to hear from you ASAP! Ticket sales end March 17th. Don't miss your chance to bid on fantastic destinations, golf packages, top restaurants and all sorts of shopping and services, plus all of
our
classroom baskets and art projects.
The live auction items
available this year are outstanding. They include a Week in Palm Springs, or a villa in Sicily, or Thanksgiving in Cabo! There is also an overnight in Napa for two or a family trip to Disney for four. We have two amazing adult parties: A Taste of Barcelona II or Backyard Fun, catered by local favorite Eat Drink, & Merry. Parents will have any opportunity to secure their kids a spot at Hike-A-Palooza or win an Outdoor Movie Night. Others may want to get the kids some on the job training as Principal for a Day or behind the scenes tour of Cumulus Media's KFOG and the Bone!
There are also tickets available for the Warriors, the Giants, the As and the Raiders.

Get your tickets to the "Tradition of Excellence" auction. The event will be on March 25, 2017, 6 PM at the Boundary Oaks Country Club, Walnut Creek. The evening includes a three-course dinner, a silent, live, dessert auction, prizes, and dancing. This annual event is our biggest fundraiser of the year and is not to be missed. It's a real SCORE for the home team. We'll see you there in your favorite jersey! Tickets are can be purchased through the school office or online at MurwoodPTA.org.

Registration is open for PTA Advocacy Day for Education
PTA invites our community to come together for the 37th Annual Advocacy Day for Education, March 24, 2017 in San Ramon. Join parents, educators, and elected officials for an informative and thought-provoking day. We will explore topics regarding student success, well-being, safety, and how to advocate for a student-centered approach to education.
Guest speakers include: Jon Kleiman, Challenge Success Parent Education Director; California State PTA leadership; local superintendents, including AUHSD Superintendent John Nickerson; and state and national legislators, including Steve Glazer, Catherine Baker, and Mark DeSaulnier.
