Program preview: May 4 - 5 Georgia Walks Summit

Check out the terrific speakers and presenters we've lined up for the Georgia Walks Summit. Peter Norton, who is known for his prize-winning article, "Street Rivals: Jaywalking and the Invention of the Motor Age Street" and his book, Fighting Traffic: The Dawn of the Motor Age in the American City, will be the keynote speaker.

The Georgia Walks Summit is an initiative of PEDS and the Georgia Dept. of Transportation and will be in Augusta on May 4, 3:30 - 7:00 PM and May 5, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM.

Concurrent tracks make the Georgia Walks Summit relevant to diverse audiences and to communities and cities of all sizes. Join us to learn best practices, help make pedestrian safety the top priority and build momentum for walkable communities. You'll return home informed and inspired.

What changes to you want to see on Monroe Drive and Boulevard?

It's not too late to share your thoughts about proposed changes to Monroe Drive and

Boulevard.

Monroe Drive and Proposed Virginia Ave Realignment

At the meeting in February, consultants described excellent opportunities, including redesigning the intersections with 10th Street and Virginia Avenue a nd installing safe crossing treatments at intersections that are not controlled by traffic signals.

Opinion is divided on one option: changin g Monroe between Yorkshire and 10th Street so it has one lane in each direction, together with a two-way left turn lane and wider sidewalks.

Doing so will make it easier to cross the street, reduce speeding, stop drivers from weaving between lanes and increase the safety of everyone who uses the road. But it will also increase delay for motorists traveling southbound during evening rush hour.

The issue boils down to values. Which matters most to you? Sav ing a few minutes? Or saving lives?
