Hometown girl and national celebrity, Jennifer Garner, talks about the potential she sees in UC's new innovation curriculum. The Wehrle Innovation Center provides UC students with the opportunity to work in a high-tech environment to create, problem solve, discover and seize the opportunity to change the world. Innovation is infused into every UC major which encourages student entrepreneurship and helps students develop the skills for which businesses and industries are looking. The future is bright for UC students!
Congratulations to our Athletic Training Students recognized recently for their research endeavors at the state athletic training conference!  Juniors Ian Honaker, Courtney Goodwin, and Sophomore Caisie Adcock were all selected for oral presentations at this yea r's WVATA (West Virginia Athletic Trainers' Association) conference in Flatwoods, WV. Ian took second place and Courtney took third place in the oral presentation category.
 
Five UC student abstracts were accepted for poster presentation, including Senior Olivia Hawley, Juniors Juan Villegas, Bekah Warrington, Nate Chapman and Kalissa Bannaster. Nate and Bekah tied for first place.  UC had the most student research represented at the state conference and received 4 out of the 6 student awards. 


The next event in the UC Speaker Series will bring an incredible story of personal transformation and cross-cultural partnership.  Make plans to join us this evening at 6:30 pm for "From Other to Brother: Learning to Co-Exist."
 
The event, presented by Roots, an initiative for understanding, nonviolence and transformation, is offered with support from the Federated Jewish Charities of Charleston, The Islamic Association of Charleston, the Sims Foundation and Café A la Fikr, will take place in the Geary Auditorium in Riggleman Hall. Special guests will be Ali Abu Awwad and Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger, who will present their vision of dignity, trust and mutual recognition and respect. 

Over 120 UC student pharmacists joined students from the WVU and Marshall University Schools of Pharmacy at the WV state capitol for Pharmacy Day at the WV Legislature on March 3rd.  The student pharmacists offered free blood pressure and diabetes screening tests, disease state information, medication adherence information and discussed health care legislation with WV legislators.

The Master of Business Administration program is now available via synchronized WebEx for students outside the Charleston area. The first cohort will start this fall, with synchronous class meetings weekly Thursday evenings. This is a great program for working professionals. Historical women's fiction author, Joy Callaway, will discuss her book, "The Fifth Avenue Artists Society" at the UC Builders luncheon this Wednesday, March 22nd. The luncheon will be held in the Erma Byrd Gallery, and reservations can be made by contacting Stephanie Martin . The luncheon is $18.00 and payment must be made in advance. 

From WV Political Science Student of the Year to life as an award-winning attorney,  Bernie Layne's life may have turned out very differently had he not me t former UC professor, Dr. Evelyn Harris, who challenged him to be the success he is today. Find out why he continues to give to the University that he says changed his life.

A second-floor hallway in the Clay Tower Building near the Schoenbaum Library recently got a facelift.  13 beautiful framed bird prints from famed WV artist, Ray Harm, were donated to the school by Harriet and Donald Deutsch, longtime friends of the University, from their personal collection . The picture above shows some of the gallery-like display.  The next time you are on campus, visit the second floor of the Clay Tower near the connecting walkway to the Innovation Center to see this lovely new addition to the University's collection of artwork.
Golden Eagle Athletic Updates

March came roaring in for the UC Baseball team, sweeping their first series since 2014  the first weekend in March against the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, and continued the winning streak with wins against Salem International March 9, 10, and 11th! The next home game is a double-header tomorrow at 1:00 and 3:30 pm vs. Fairmont State.

Men's Volleyball will face New Jersey Institute of Technology on the 18th at 3:00 pm.  They are coming off big wins against Lincoln Memorial University.

Softball  will be back at home Tuesday the 21st, against Ohio Valley University. Game times are 2:00 and 4:00 pm. UC will take the field against Salem International University on the 23rd, with game times at 2:00 and 4:00 pm.

Catch our Women's Lacrosse Team in action at home on March 22nd when they take on Davis & Elkins at 3:00 pm.

The UC baseball team is hosting its Inaugural Conference Kickoff Dinner tomorrow evening from 6:00-9:00 pm in the Ballroom (3rd fl of Geary Student Union). The evening will begin with a silent auction from 6:00- 7:00 pm followed by dinner and a talk from local lawyer and UC baseball alumnus, Bernie Layne. - Half marathon at 8:00 am and 5K at 8:15 am
- Race registration on race day from 5:30-7:00 am
- For participants already registered, packet pickup is on March 18th from 4:00-8:00 pm
- Packet pickup will resume on race day from 6:30-8:00 am in the Innovation Center
- All runners age 21+ get 1 free beer
 
Festival Information
The festival is free and open to the public and attendees do not have to run in the race to participate!
- 10:30 am-1:30 pm on the UC Riverbank (rain location in Ballroom)
- 4 options of WV microbrews, lunch, live music, maple cotton candy, kettle corn, 3D printed cookie cutters, bouncy house, etc. (cookie cutters are student made and are limited edition)
- Music is Ron Sowell & The Killer Tomatoes
- WV Microbrews are $6 per serving or three for $15
- Lunch for sale - serving chicken and pork BBQ with a variety of sauces, vegetarian wrap sandwiches, homemade potato chips and dip & coleslaw ($8 in advance or $10 at the door) Order here in advance.

Make plans to visit your alma mater this summer during FestivAll a city-wide, multi-arts summer festival! Join us for an alumni gathering on the Party Deck at Appalachian Power Park on Friday evening.  Watch the baseball game from the best seats in the house while enjoying all you can eat food and drinks until the 7th inning. Space on the Deck is limited and tickets are $15 each (offered to alumni at 1/2 the normal ticket price).  There is a maximum of 2 reduced-priced tickets per alum and tickets must be purchased by June 14th . The Center for Career Development is seeking alums who would be willing to serve as professional mentors for students majoring in business. The time commitment is low- we ask for 1 hour every two weeks, and the mentorship can be as short as one semester, but can be longer if mentors have a good experience and wish to continue. For more information and to express your interest, please contact  Travis Kahle, the Associate Director for Experiential Learning at UC.
