March 2017 - IE SHRM News & Updates
March Meeting - March 16, 2017
"Moving from Unconscious Bias to Unconscious Inclusion"

Join us March 16, 2017 at 11:30 am at the Mission Inn in Riverside for lunch and our March topic.  Diversity is beneficial to business, but how many companies believe this enough to do something about it? Stats alone will not change anything. Until companies truly understand how diversity, or the lack thereof, affects their specific bottom line, nothing much will be done. The problem has been identified, but remains unsolved.  Learn more.
EHRP (Young Professionals)
Emerging HR Professionals

Our first educational workshop for the Emerging HR Professionals was held on February 25. Essential resources and tips were given to help guide the emerging HR professionals into their professional careers. The workshop engaged the young professionals by bridging together theory and practice through practical application of HR related issues or scenarios. More specifically, the emerging professionals learned vital ways to protect their company and be in compliance to California's Labor Laws
This event is free and open to those who are new to the HR field or are seeking advice on how to transition into the world of Human Resources? Learn more.

Legislative & Legal Update

Did you find yourself ahead of the 2017 legal requirements, or were you rushing to catch up? Are you confused as to what legal requirements your company has to follow with all of the differing regulations from Cities and Counties? Many municipalities are enacting their own labor laws and there doesn't seem to be a lack of new legislation being introduced at City, County, Federal and State levels. For instance, the City of Los Angeles enacted "Ban the Box" for employers with 10 or more employees, beginning January 20, 2017 following San Francisco's lead.  Learn more.

Ninth Circuit Holds Liability Waiver Combined with Disclosure Notice Form Violates Fair Credit Reporting Act
On January 20, 2017, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals held that an employer violates the Fair Credit Reporting Act ("FCRA") where its FCRA disclosure form also includes language serving as a liability wavier. The Ninth Circuit, which has jurisdiction over California, is the first court to address the issue of whether employers may satisfy the FCRA by combining a background check disclosure form with a liability waiver.  Read Full Case.

Be a Champion for HR Professionals!

One of the most rewarding parts of being a proud member of SHRM is seeing the reach of the SHRM Foundation Scholarship Programs.  Are you aware that in 2017, the SHRM Foundation will award almost $500,000 in support to students seeking undergraduate, graduate, certification and professional development opportunities?  Do you know someone who may benefit from this amazing program?   Are you interested in applying?  Are you interested in volunteering?  The IESHRM Board of Directors would love to see IESHRM members benefit from this important program, so if you are interested in learning more and would like personal guidance regarding the application process or how you can help as a volunteer, please reach out to me at [email protected].  I look forward to seeing you at this month's IESHRM Chapter Meeting at Mission Inn!
