CASC Funding Opportunities

Plan to intern for a social justice based organization over the summer? Apply for the CASC Social Justice Internship Fund. The fund provides support for students seeking internship, field, or volunteer opportunities in community settings with a social justice emphasis. The application deadline is Thursday, March 30th. Details can be found below.
If you are developing a project, program, or initiative related to social justice through a student organization, apply for CASC funding by submitting an application through the funding proposal form. The details on how to request funding are listed in CASC announcements. There are many programs, initiatives, and fellowships to build your awareness about various forms of social justice engagement campus wide. Take a look at the diverse array of opportunities available in the announcements.

CASC Funding for Student Organizations
CASC students are involved in many activities around campus and we receive multiple requests for  funding. CASC has a limited pool of money for which CASC students are eligible to apply up to $250. In order to apply for a CASC grant, you must be part of a registered student org and have an SOAS account. There are four  funding deadlines throughout the year - October 1, December 1, January 15, and March 15. Please allow 2-3 weeks for a response.  To apply for  funding , students must  submit a funding proposal Contact the CASC office with questions.

CASC Social Justice Internship Fund
The CASC Social Justice Internship Fund provides funding for students seeking internship, field, or volunteer opportunities in community settings with a social justice emphasis. We recognize that many students face barriers participating in summer programs without compensation, stipends, or awards. Supported by the generosity of CASC alumni and friends, The CASC Social Justice Internship seeks to offset a portion of students' cost of living to encourage participation in social justice efforts in community settings. CASC Minor students are eligible to apply for grants of up to $500 to support their engagement in a social justice internship,

CASC Drop-In 
For the 2017 Winter Semester the drop in hours for CASC are Mondays from 10AM - 1PM, and Wednesdays from 1PM - 4PM and  in rooms 3833 and 3831 in the School of Social Work. Stop by if you have questions related to academic advising regarding the minor, course planning, senior audits, declaring the minor and any other general questions regarding CASC!

Come to this info session to learn more about the  CASC  community, what it can offer you in your undergraduate program, the types of courses you'll take, and available opportunities for  CASC  students after graduation! Understanding Social Action in a Contested Environment:
A Post Presidential Inauguration Discussion on Social Division, Unity, and Change
The following co-sponsored program will offer insight about existing social divisions, the complexities of unity, and the importance of social change. Through a moderated interview, presenters will also share knowledge about emergent policy changes and its effect on national and campus climate, discuss multiple levels of social action in challenging contexts, and offer strategies for coalition building.

Know Our Rights: A Day of Workshops
The goal of these workshops is to educate students about their individual rights and the rights of their peers and allies. The workshops are specifically tailored to address the rights of those whose identities are actively under threat, and foster the confidence in both the affected individuals and their allies (on and off-campus) to understand and assert their human and civil rights. Find more information, and register for the workshops. Destress Series: First Monday Yoga

Black History Month Calendar

Safe House Volunteer  Opportunities 
Safe House is a nonprofit that works to provide safety, support, advocacy and resources for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence and their children. They are offering training for various volunteer opportunities.  Apply  by March 1. Find more information  here . There will be an information session where participants can meet Safe House staff and learn about opportunities .

Standing Rock Donation Drive
The Michigan Indigenous Action Collective (MIAC) are partnering with the Native American Student Association (NASA) to gain support in collecting resources and supplies for the Water Protectors at Standing Rock, ND. MIAC and NASA are planning to take a trip to Standing Rock during spring break to drop off the collected donations. Donations can be dropped off at the MESA office and the School of Social Work. Pick up will be Thursday, Feb. 23 at 5pm.

Dreamscape
This hip-hop production depicts the death and inner life of Myeisha Mills, who was killed in an act of police brutality in 1998. The play examines the relationships between race, the body and violence. Following the play there will be a talkback with the actors and playwright exploring the play and the context in which it was written. Free, no tickets required. More information here

Open in Emergency: Asian American Mental Health
The Critical Ethnic & Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies Working Group welcomes you to a series of events about Asian American Mental Health between now and March. They hope to build community and space for critical, creative dialogues on mental health, a topic often silenced or stigmatized. Their approach in understanding Asian American mental health is connected to the matrix of activism, resistance, and well-being of all communities of color. View the events.

2017 Women of Color Taskforce
The Women of Color Task Force is hosting its 35th annual career conference. Attendees select from over 20 workshop sessions designed to support professional and personal development. This event is open to all U-M personnel (staff, faculty, and students) and general public. The featured keynote speakers are Ms. Jane Elliott, Diversity Scholar and Pioneer, and Mr. Roland S. Martin, Host & Managing Editor of News One Now who will have discussion on "Race, Gender & Identity in the Workplace" moderated by Professor Robin Means Coleman. More information and registration

Scholarships and funding opportunities
Humanity in Action Fellowship in Detroit
This program will explore the biography of Detroit with emphasis on democratic inclusion of marginalized groups, equitable development, social entrepreneurship and public health. Fellows will challenge their own assumptions about race, class, development, health and equity among other fundamental issues. Applications due February 28. Learn more and apply today

The Welcoming Project Scholarship
The Welcoming Project will award a $500 scholarship to one undergraduate student who provides outstanding contributions to LGBTQ activism. Applicants must be enrolled in degree-granting institutions in August 2017. Applications due March 1. Learn more and apply today

CSS Fellowships
Fellows will work with CCS Fundraising and select clients on a range of projects in the Chicagoland area, potentially including special events, feasibility studies, development audits, leadership trainings, and campaign management services. Fellows will be paid with a stipend of $5,000. Applications due March 3. Learn more and apply today

Spiritual Ecology Fellowship
This fellowship is designed to offer an experience of deep study and practical application of the principles of spiritual ecology. You will develop and implement pilot projects with potential to be catalysts for change. There will be 8 selected participants who receive full tuition scholarships and a $10,000 stipend to assist with project development. Leadership Engagement Scholarship
The Leadership Engagement Scholarship is a new scholarship initiated by the Central Student Government (CSG) that addresses the financial burden of students with cost barriers to engaging co-curricular activities. This fund supports student leadership in any and every avenue of campus life, such as Greek Life, student government, club sports, and the performing arts sector. LSA Democracy in Action Fund
Have an idea to promote democratic engagement on campus? Want to promote real dialogue and inclusive action? Want to put your liberal arts education in motion? The Democracy in Action Fund provides grants ranging from $500 to $2500 to support students, faculty, and staff to do the challenging work of advancing genuine democratic engagement on campus. Info sessions on the fund will be held February 16 & 17 from 4PM - 5PM in 1807 East Quad. Learn more and apply today.

LSA Internship Scholarships
LSA Students with demonstrated financial need are eligible for scholarship support for up to $5000 for internship opportunities during the spring and summer terms. Final applications are due Thursday June 15th, and award decisions are made on a rolling basis. Learn more and apply today

Semester in Detroit
Semester in Detroit (SiD) seeks to provide opportunities for all students at the University of Michigan to engage with and learn from Detroit and its communities. Through an intensive urban studies curriculum that explores 20th century Detroit history, urban planning, the non-profit sector, creative writing, and more, SiD students learn about the city in a comprehensive way while living in Detroit and interning with a community-based organization. MICHR Summer Immersions Program
The Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research (MICHR) invites you to apply to their 10-week summer immersions program. This program is full time and includes workshops as well as a hands-on research experience for everyone enrolled. The experience is designed to engage students in clinical, translational, and health disparities research and inspire them to choose a career focused on research. Students will learn the fundamentals of research through individual and team-based learning experiences. Application deadline is March 1. Learn more and apply.

University Center For The Child and Family Internships
The University Center for the Child and Family is pleased to offer two undergraduate internship opportunities designed to provide clinical training in children's mental health. Ideal applicants are advanced students with interests in psychology, medicine, education, or social work who are able to make a two semester (fall, 2017, winter 2018) commitment of 10 hours per week. The AFL-CIO Organizing Institute 
The AFL-CIO OI provides an intensive training program for candidates interested in becoming a union organizer. The process begins with a three-day training where candidates learn and practice basic union organizing skills (housing and meals provided). Applicants selected participate in a 12-week, paid field training with an AFL-CIO affiliate union, where they learn union-building skills and gain experience on a union organizing campaign firsthand. Upon successful completion of the AFL-CIO Apprenticeship Program, apprentices are recommended by the Organizing Institute to be hired by local and national unions. Find more information here

SAGA Innovations
SAGA Innovations is a program in under performing school districts of New York City and Chicago helping students reach new academic achievement through a high-dosage tutoring model. SAGA offers a fellowship for recent college graduates, in which the fellow works with two students for one class period per day for an entire school year. During this class period fellows develop lesson plans specially tailored to each student's learning style and curriculum. Learn more and apply today.
