BHS Students De-stress With Mental Health Day
|
This week BHS Juniors faced one of the potentially most stressful events of their high school academic career: the ACT.
We are fortunate in the Baraboo School District to have onsite testing, allowing our students to take the ACT at their very own school. District testing has been found to improve student outcomes because it can help reduce test day stress, like the stress of traveling to a test site or testing in an unfamiliar environment. But hey, it's still a test - an important test - and tests can be stressful.
Baraboo High School rallied for its students with its second annual Mental Wellness Day on March 1. The goal: promote mental health and end the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
BHS counselor Kathy Thornburgh: "We want students to be as comfortable talking about mental illness as they would a physical illness."
Students school-wide participated in different sessions with topics including Mindfulness, Yoga, Aromatherapy, Self-Care and more.
Thank you to our BHS counselors and staff for organizing this annual event.

Summer Academy Registration Opens March 17
|
The Baraboo School District will again be offering the Summer Academy for students who are currently in grades K-5 within the Baraboo School District and/or for students of this age that reside within the Baraboo School District attendance area.
The Summer Academy will include enrichment classes that have literacy and math integrated throughout each K-1st, 2nd-3rd, and 4th-5th grade class.
Al Behrman Elementary School (400 Mulberry St., Baraboo) will host Summer Academy from June 12-July 12 (no school on July 3rd-5th) and free breakfast and lunch will be available to students each day.

Samantha Baily named NF Artist of the Month
|
 Samantha Bailey, a second grade student at North Freedom Elementary, was named North Freedom's Artist of the Month for March.
Samantha is in Mrs. Ginther's class. She was chosen as Artist of the Month because of her
unique ideas and creative problem solving. She demonstrates high quality of craftsmanship and hard work in the art room.
All of the second grade students designed an original image using pen or sharpie. They were then able to make prints in shaving cream mixed with liquid watercolor, which transferred to the paper.
Samantha drew a chick in its own environment and printed in a mix of blue and green.
Samantha's artwork is on display at the North Freedom Village Hall.

Tech Ed Department is Busy
|
Our Tech Ed department is bustling with skills this month.
The communications class is working on lego robotics. The students are learning about programming the logic controller (PLC), then writing and presenting about how this technology is used in local industries and the potential impacts.
In the welding classes, students are making little pieces to form letters for the 4K and Kindergarteners to be able to identify letters. The students will cut out more than 1000 individual pieces, and then will finish them to make them safe for the younger students.
Our manufacturing class is making wooden chairs for the Baraboo River Rendezvous group. The students will make a total of 25 chairs.
The SkillsUSA class and building trades students are making benches for Devil's Lake State Park. The students will make 25 Leopold benches and 12 memorial benches.

4K Registration Date Set for April 6

If you have a child that will be turning 4-years-old by September 1, 2017, we hope that you will be able to join us for the BELC (Baraboo Early Learning Cooperative) registration for 4-year-old kindergarten programming for 2017-18

Our Art Department has a great event coming up - our first annual Fine Arts Night! Mark your calendars from 6-8 on April 27.
There will be music, live demonstrations, delicious food and more.
This event is a partnership between the BHS Art Department, the BHS Forensics Team, the BHS FCE Department and the BHS Music Department.
Community Members and Local Arts Organizations are encouraged to participate. Options include submitting art for display, setting up an information booth, performing a literary reading or demonstration of your craft, or any other artistic ability you'd like to showcase.

Dairy Queen Fundraiser Raises $459 for West Playground
|
In the month of January (and a few make-up days in February due to snow days!), the West Kindergarten Center held a Dairy Queen Fundraiser to raise funds for new playground equipment at West.
Last week
Mr. Robert Thompson from Dairy Queen in Baraboo presented a check in the amount of $459 to Dr. Chris Olson, West/BELC Principal, for future playground equipment purchases
Dairy Queen has been an ongoing partner with West and BELC (4K) schools, having assisted in the funding of some technology and literacy supplies in past years.
We appreciate our community partnerships: thank you Dairy Queen for supporting our schools!

The Baraboo High School Chess Club and the Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation have teamed up to host a Chess Tournament on
March 4th, 2017. Online registration is open now.. The tournament will take place at the Baraboo High School and be open to all K12 Students in Wisconsin.
