Vision Statements Approved by the Board
|
The aftermath of the Strategic Visioning session held on February 3 looked like the post-it notes at left. Among hundreds of ideas, key themes emerged. The ILF Board approved the following
Vision Statements March 9. While wording may change slightly, we want to share with our members and partners.
We envision a future...
- where communities strongly support, value, and utilize libraries.
- where libraries are highly responsive to the changing needs of their communities.
- where people find and use information effectively and ethically.
- where libraries lead Hoosiers into the future information environment.
- where libraries initiate and implement innovations.
- where library staff have the skills and knowledge to provide exceptional service.
- where libraries and library staff are served and led by a strong, stable, and vibrant state-wide organization.

When Legislators Love Libraries...
|
On Tuesday, librarians and library supporters met with their legislators and celebrated
125 years of Indiana Library Federation with
Senate Concurrent Resolution 14.
Sen. Kenley presented the resolution in the Senate (
see video and photo at right), and
Rep. T. Brown presented it in the House.
During the presentation,
Rep. Mayfield and
Rep. Klinker praised the outstanding service and stewardship of taxpayer funds by libraries in their communities. Many legislators shared their own favorite uses of the library (story time, Overdrive, meeting rooms). Some asked about changes in circulation and technology, especially as we made the case for internet connectivity funds.

Publishers donated over 6,000 new books for consideration in the Young Hoosier Book Award (YHBA) program. Sixty volunteers met on March 4 for training about evaluating books to encourage recreational reading in Picture Book, Intermediate and Middle Grade categories. Each volunteer reads at least 20 books, assessing whether kids would enjoy the book, quality of writing, genre, format, curriculum connections and diversity. THANK YOU to our YHBA volunteers and the publishers.
Voting for the current cycle opens April 1, and votes are due May 1.

April marks
School Library Month, where we want to highlight how school libraries support educational outcomes. During
National Library Week, April 9-15, you might create a display, activate your social media or plan an event.
Volunteer Recognition Week
What are you planning for
National Volunteer Recognition Week, April 23-29? Here are a few ideas to recognize the board and committee members, parent volunteers, Friends and other volunteers who support your library.
- Include an item on your April Board Agenda about importance of volunteers in your organization.
- Send personal notes, naming one thing you really appreciate about their volunteer service.
- Post a display with volunteer photos or names.
- Low budget, but meaningful, gifts with a special note include seed packets (thanks for planting seeds for the future of our library with your volunteer time), specially named candy (thank you for being a Lifesaver; your volunteer service is worth more than 100Grand to us, etc.).

Have you filed your taxes?
Remember volunteer mileage.
|
People who itemize their taxes may include not only charitable contributions, but also mileage for volunteer activities.
If your library, school or organization does not pay your mileage to ILF volunteer committees or events, consider including your volunteer mileage. While only $.14/mile, it can add up. A few samples are below:
- Most YHBA and Rosie volunteers drive to meetings.
- District conference planners usually hold 4-6 meetings.
- ILF Board and Committee members meet 2 - 6 times in person each year.
When combined with your charitable contributions, your itemized deductions grow.

We still need volunteers, especially:
- Academic librarians to serve on the ILF Board, IN Academic Library Association and various ILF Committees;
- Public Library Trustees to serve on the ILF Board and various committees; and
- ILF members to serve on Annual Conference, Awards, Honors and Scholarships and Publications-Communications Committees.
Time commitments vary from 12 hours a year to 3 hours a month. Most meetings are held via conference call/online meeting.

Long-time ILF Member Phil Orr Dies in Tragic Accident
|
|
Philip Eugene Orr died on February 26 from injuries suffered during an automobile accident.
Phil graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and the University of Illinois-Champaign with post-graduate degrees in History and Library Science.
He was recently retired from the David L. Rice Library as Distance Learning Librarian for the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville, Indiana. Phil received the Indiana Library Federation Leadership Award in 2009 and was the
co-founder of the Distance Learning Division.
