Qualifiers for the international DECA conference and competition

Business academy qualifies 15 for international career conference

Northwest ISD's Academy of Business Management & Entrepreneurship, housed in Eaton High School, has qualified 15 students to participate in the International Career Development Conference, where they will compete against top students from across the world in categories to advance their professional skills.

As a result of their qualifications, the students will compete at the International Career Development Conference from April 26 to 29 in Anaheim, California.

The Academy of Business Management & Entrepreneurship's international qualifiers, listed alphabetically, include: Riley Adams, Alicia Alcorn, Chris Arrasmith, Kinsey Girod, Zachary Hill, Benjamin Hunt, Landry Lashombe, Aaron Martinez, Brenna Matthews, Lillie McMaster, Renee Moran, Cherinn Norman, Jacob Norwood, Madelyne Onstott and Shayla Phar.

The accomplishments mark the first time in district history that Northwest ISD students have qualified for the International Career Development Conference. Academy of Business Management & Entrepreneurship DECA members are led by Cathy Slagle, DECA advisor and academy instructor. They are also instructed by Antonio Banos and Estie Cuellar.

Northwest ISD will hold a bond election in May to consider raising taxes to allow the district to add schools and expand some existing schools. Voters can learn all about the full proposal at www.nisdtxbond.org.

If approved by voters, the bond package would primarily address growth in the district by adding three new elementary schools, replacing one elementary school (Haslet Elementary) and expand some existing schools (Medlin and Tidwell middle schools, Byron Nelson and Eaton high schools). Other bond funds would be used to purchase technology improvements, improve extracurricular and career programs at some facilities, and fund safety and security upgrades across the district.

Election Day is May 6, and early voting will last from April 24 to May 2. The last day to register for the election is April 6.

Five Northwest ISD wrestlers earn state medals, including a UIL championship

Five Northwest ISD student-athletes walked away with medals from the UIL Wrestling State Tournament, including one wrestler who won a state championship.

From Eaton High School, two wrestlers earned bronze medals: Kiylie Delgado in the 102-pound girls classification, and Mattison Parker in the 119-pound girls classification. Additionally, Mark Springer won 5A Assistant Coach of the Year honors. Eaton is in its second year of existence, and the awards mark the school's first honors at the state tournament.

Three Northwest High School student-athletes earned state medals: Schon Ausman earned a bronze in the 145-pound boys classification, Andrena Carter earned a bronze in the 165-pound girls classification and Mike Kumlien earned a gold and state championship in the 132-pound boys classification. In winning the state championship, Mike defeated the wrestler who beat him for the regional title in their weight classification.

Both Eaton and Northwest compete in the UIL's 5A classification. The Eaton girls placed eighth as a team, and the Northwest boys placed ninth as a team. Eaton's wrestling team is led by head coach Bryan Shivers, and Northwest's wrestling team is led by head coach Daniel McCready.

Profile of an Educator: Brooke Woods

Brooke Woods, a first-grade teacher at Sendera Ranch Elementary, is an example of a quality Northwest ISD educator because of her ability to teach students. While students are learning and working hard, they also want to be involved in lessons, as Principal John Booles explains.

Spring break lasts March 13-20 for students

All Northwest ISD schools and offices will be closed Monday, March 13, to Friday, March 17, as students and staff are off for spring break.

In addition to spring break, students will have Monday, March 20, off for the district's second unused inclement weather day. Teachers and staff will use this date as a professional development day at their campuses or offices. Schools will resume classes during their regular hours on Tuesday, March 21.

Controlled burns continuing for S.H. 114, F.M. 156 expansion

Controlled burns are expected to remain a regular occurrence near the S.H. 114 underpass of the F.M. 156 bridge as construction crews continue to work to expand roads.

These burns are being handled by trained professionals as they get rid of brush that was cleared for the expansions. Construction in this area (which is in view of Northwest High School and may also affect traffic to Hatfield and Love elementary schools as well as Pike Middle School) is expected to last into late 2018 or early 2019.

Northwest ISD will email parents in this area if and when any major road closures or other traffic delays are expected to take place. The district is working with construction officials to ensure updates are provided in advance of any such traffic impediments.

More than 1,200 students take part in Techno Expo

More than 1,200 students recently took part in the annual Northwest ISD Techno Expo, which showcases advanced and unique learning made possible through technology.

Students not only presented their projects to attendees, but they also led the event as tour leaders. Culinary arts students even provided the food that preceded their peers' presentations, and students also led live floral design. Beyond the presentations and other student-led activities, Dell surprised two students with Chromebooks it donated.

Community folder provides news and updates about third-party events

Northwest ISD's community folder, located at www.nisdtx.org/communityfolder, provides district families with information about events and services in the area that are not hosted by third parties (and not Northwest ISD).

These events include camps, sporting offerings, local business services and more. Simply click the "Approved Flyers" link (click the "+" icon on smartphones and mobile devices) to view all the current or upcoming events and services. Local organizations and businesses can also provide information on this website to offer their flyers for distribution in the community folder.

Six Northwest ISD Destination Imagination teams advance to state tournament

Eighty-seven teams from Northwest ISD recently participated in the regional Destination Imagination tournament, with six teams advancing to the state tournament and dozens more earning medals.

Destination Imagination provides students with open-ended academic challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts and social entrepreneurship. The program fosters creativity and curiosity, with team members collaborating to solve complex problems.

At the Greater Fort Worth Regional Tournament on Feb. 25, Northwest ISD accounted for 32 teams that medaled, six of which will advance to the state tournament in Lubbock. Teams from the following schools earned entry into the state tournament: Beck, Granger and Thompson elementary schools; Chisholm Trail, Medlin and Tidwell middle schools.
