Gardening in Kindergarten
|
The Kindergarten were very happy to see the wheat they had planted last month grow and showing nice "wheat ears". Charlotte and her classmates are making sure they get enough water but not too much! A true skill they need to master: "Take care and observe the development of a plant". Read more in our Preschool blog.

Missions Project in 4th Grade
Le projet sur les Missions en CM1
Mattox is presenting is work to Eleonor (3rd A) and Mahé (3rd B)
Fourth Grade students at SDFAS have worked very hard over the past few weeks to research, write a report, and complete a model on one California Mission of their choice. The students presented their reports and creative models verbally in front of the class and shared what they learned. The missions were on display in the fourth grade classrooms for all students to view. They had a chance to ask questions in order to gain a better understanding of the Spanish influence in California's history.

ÉDITO
This year's Gala theme, "In Full Sail," celebrates the idea that, under Christian Jarlov's tenure as our head of school, we have moved forward, and should, strive to continue on this path.
Over the years, gala proceeds have provided our students with a wide array of new tools and programs encouraging them to realize their fullest potential. This aim is reflected in this year's Fund-A-Need that will support educating the whole child connecting mind and body through active education. With these goals in mind, the Fund-A-Need will include renovating our field and resurfacing our blacktop, which will significantly enhance our ability to provide a comprehensive athletic program that further develops our students' physical fitness, self-confidence and interpersonal skills.
In the meantime, we are grateful for you participation in our ONLINE AUCTION. Visit
www.galaauction.org
, anyone can participate! There are many ways to support your school while stocking up on terrific opportunities for entertainment and family fun.
Thank you to our teachers, our parents and all the members of our community for making our gala a spectacular event year after year.
Avec Gratitude !
Chers parents,

Field trip to Bate Nuts Farm
Wednesday March 8th, all the PK1 students visited Bates Nuts Farm. It was a beautiful day, and the students were lucky enough to admire the orchard trees in full blossom while riding on an open wagon train.
The very fun part was to be able to feed the goats, the sheep, and even a lama!
The main activity of the farm is to process walnuts, our students were able to crack some walnuts using a special soft ended hammer.
Visiting such a place is certainly the best way to acquire and remember a lot of new vocabulary!

AEFE Eldorado Project is coming along nicely
Le projet Eldorado de l'AEFE prend forme
Pictured: Quentin, Paul, Noan
7th and 3rd graders have entered the Eldorado contest this school year. The project encourages students to practice collective writing around the Eldorado theme. Students have been placed in mixed grade groups, with 7th graders as leaders of their group.
Students are in action, and the project is nicely moving on! Students demonstrate excellent team work skills, working in small groups independently and collaboratively on the Eldorado Project.
We are looking forward to discovering the works!
For all detailed information, contact Alexandre Franquet (3rd grade) and Marion Addo (7th grade).

Frankenstein Trial by the 8th graders
Le procès de Frankenstein par les élèves de 4ème
During the second trimester, the students in Extended Studies in French have worked on the theme of a literary mock trial.
This inter-disciplinary project including Literature, French language, Civic Education and Ethics in Science aimed to accuse Dr. Viktor Frankenstein of murder, judging he was in fact responsible of his creature's actions as he was the creator.
After studying the French legal system and understanding its differences with the American one, students assigned to themselves their roles in the court room: general attorney, defence attorney, judges, witnesses, experts and the accused person. For each of their interventions, students had to study the book by Mary Shelley and master the art of rhetorics and argumentation. After 2 months of preparation, the trial took place in the auditorium in front of an audience composed of the 7th graders who debated passionately about this issue.
The end was dire for the Doctor who was judged guilty and condemned to 25 years in reclusion for murder, profanation of tombs, disregard to the ethics of science and failure to provide assistance leading to death.

Boîtes sensorielles en Maternelle
Pictured: Evangeline
Our PK0C students can experience different matters with those very clever sensory boxes fixed on the wall in their class. The students enjoy explore the different sensations and learn how to name them: "doux"(soft), "rugueux"(rough), "lisse"(smooth)...
It is part of their curriculum "Discover the matter", and will help expand their vocabulary.

Writing Contest in French for 6th and 7th graders
Pictured: Chloe, Ariana, Sidonie, Philippine, Apolline and John, Pablo, Matthew, Jean-Baptise.
6th and 7th graders met in the auditorium in order to work on their créative writing skills. Within a 2-hour time frame, they created stories pulling inspiration from two Magritte paintings: "Le Séducteur" and "Le château des Pyrénées". They also had to incorporate at least 7 of the yearly 10 words promoted by the Francophonie's Contest "Dis-moi Dix mots". These words had been studied in class beforehand. This year, all ten words were related to the "Web" theme.

Middle School Math Club: presentation from Radiance Calmer, from UCSD
On Thursday March 2, 2017, the middle school students from the Math Club (with teachers Nicolas Giot and Alexandre Franquet) enjoyed a presentation from
Radiance, a scientist at the University of California - San Diego. The goal of the presentation was to emphasize how concretely math concepts are applied to science research. They explored climate change, the relationship between océan and atmosphere, ocean acidification, and extreme weather events.
Thank you to Nicolas, Alexandre and Radiance for providing students with this very well crafted curriculum blending math and science, class work and real world experience!

Professional Development Day
Journée de formation professionnelle
Teachers from SDFAS participated Monday at the Conference for San Diego Private and Independent Schools. Over 700 teachers and administration participated and this year the guest speaker was Pat Basset, former president of the National Association of Independent School.
It was a great opportunity to learn and connect with teachers of other schools. Two of our teachers François Trégouët and Emmanuel Parello offered workshops for colleagues of other schools.
