AP SEMINAR COMES TO PENINSULA HIGH
Peninsula High has been on a College Board waiting list to offer the new AP CAPSTONE Program, since 2015.  We are thrilled that we have been invited to participate and will begin the program this fall by offering the first course which is called AP Seminar. More information about the AP Capstone program can be found here on the College Board website.

SO WHAT IS AP SEMINAR?
Do you like to debate? Like to investigate issues happening in today's world? Like to work in teams and create projects? If yes, then AP Seminar is a perfect fit for you. AP Seminar is a year-long course in which students investigate real-world issues from multiple perspectives. Students gather and analyze information from various sources in order to develop credible and valid evidence-based arguments. Modeled after college courses, AP Seminar is project-based rather than test driven: its emphasis is on your ability to communicate with others on a variety of modern controversies through a spectrum of outlets.

Available to 10th, 11th, and 12th graders, AP Seminar will focus its content on one theme throughout the year: Survival. Mrs. Yamaguchi and Mrs. Sidella have teamed up to deliver this exciting theme through a multitude of sources: videos, Tweets, articles, taped lectures, speeches, etc. Sign up for this elective with your counselor and on Aeries under English Special Projects.

If you missed this week's Sports Update
you can read it here

Congratulations to Boys' Basketball on a great CIF run.  Thank you to the many fans who drove to Pasadena in Friday afternoon traffic to support our boys. The conditions and experience at Pasadena High School were completely unacceptable.  Thank you Panthers for maintaining the highest degree of integrity throughout the game. Thank you to the many fans who kept their cool, when refused entry, even though they had tickets. Thank you to Wendell Yoshida, Micah Farrell, and Michael Wanmer for stepping  up and taking charge of the safety of our fans. You all witnessed the worst example of sportsmanship that I have ever seen. Rest assured, we are addressing this situation with CIF.
Congratulations Girls' Water polo on your CIF Championship!  You are a small but mighty group of talented players.  Your Panther community came out in force to support your efforts.  Congratulations to Coach Garcia and Coach Helmrich, and thank you for your dedication.
On Wednesday, Tanvi Varma, a student advocate for wellness, from Northern California spoke with our faculty and zero period students. Sharing her journey at a high school similar to Peninsula High had a tremendous impact on our staff and students.  We look forward to her returning this Spring to speak with more students.  Our children can teach us, if we are willing to listen.

Thank you to our PTSA for sponsoring the Peninsula High documentary called Screenagers.  All Panthers were able to see the documentary in two school-wide assemblies.  The message was all about balance in our use of technology.  Thursday evening we had a well-attended showing for the community.

Nia is a cancer survivor, so it was only appropriate that she joined us in our Walk for Life.

RPV PASSES SOCIAL HOST ORDINANCE
Underage drinking in Palos Verdes is a community concern, with 26% of 11th graders reporting current alcohol or drug use (past 30 days).  Social settings are the primary source of alcohol for underage youth in Palos Verdes with 60% of 11th graders obtaining alcohol at parties or events outside of school and 20% obtaining alcohol from adults at friends' homes.  Data from the PV Healthy Kids Survey 2015-16.   Social media has only heightened the problem by advertising and promoting parties in the South Bay.  Parties go from 30 to 300 people in a heartbeat because of social media.

Parents advocate for local social ordinances as one of many methods to deterring underage drinking.  Social host ordinances are city-specific laws that imposes liability on adults in private settings that they own, lease or control for providing alcohol and/or allowing underage drinking among children who are not their own.   In addition to deterring adults from serving alcohol to youth, a local social host ordinance helps educate the community about the dangers associated with underage drinking such as drunk driving and health risks.  Community advocates encourage families to find alternatives to serving alcohol at parties.

The City of Rancho Palos Verdes approved the first social host liability ordinance last week, and with minor adjustments at their March 7, 2017 meeting, RPV will join Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Long Beach and Carson as local cities with such ordinances.  It is on the agenda for Palos Verdes Estates on Tuesday, Feb. 28.

The ordinance would provide police departments with a very specific additional tool for law enforcement.  The ordinances would help raise awareness as part of a larger movement to change the social norm to discourage underage drinking and that underage drinking is not a "rite of passage."  The ordinances would have a deterrent effect to prevent parties and assist families with making healthy decisions.

Rancho Palos Verdes parent Rod Uyeda, the former chief of police in Manhattan Beach who had brought the ordinance to that city several years ago, was instrumental in promoting the effort in the four PV cities.   Uyeda and parent Linda Reid approached the PVP Council of PTAs for support and last December, the Council PTA endorsed a resolution to advocate for social host ordinances.  The PVPUSD Board of Education voted unanimously in January to endorse the PTA resolution encouraging local cities to adopt a social host ordinance.

Palos Verdes community supporters now include the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and our local high school principals, Mitzi Cress and Charles Park. At the RPV City Council meeting last week, Cress spoke about her concerns for parents who want to make their kids popular through serving alcohol to teens.   She also shared her experiences with students who have suffered the effects of underage drinking.

Our community collective goal is to protect the health and safety of our youth.
