Our very own Mather Veterans Village was featured on the cover of Western City magazine this month. Mather Veterans Village is the first permanent supportive housing for homeless and disabled veterans in the region. Read the article online.
Rancho Cordova Gives 3,500 Free Books to Students

As Dr. Seuss wrote, "The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."
 
The City of Rancho Cordova celebrated Read Across America Day - the birthday of Dr. Seuss - on February 28, 2017 by presenting a new, free book to every pre-K through second grade public school student in Rancho Cordova.
 
City officials delivered 3,500 books to 14 elementary schools in Rancho Cordova. The book topics varied by grade from Pete the Pig Likes Fruit for kindergarteners to Famous Places Around the World for second graders.

Get "Buzzed" at St. Baldrick's

Did you know that 1 in every 285 children in America will have cancer before the age of 20? Join the City of Rancho Cordova in the fight to end childhood cancer at its annual St. Baldrick's Foundation signature head-shaving event on Friday, March 24th.
 
Buzzed at St. Baldrick's, an opportunity to raise money through pledges for getting your hair "buzzed,"  will be held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at American River Brewing Company, 11151 Trade Center Drive. The event will feature local barbers who will shave the heads of those raising funds for St. Baldrick's, raffles and laughs, as well as for-purchase libations from American River Brewing Company and dinner from the Culinerdy Cruzer food truck. 

Help Homeless Children with Project 680

Project 680, a grassroots organization led by local residents with the mission of supporting homeless students in Rancho Cordova, is kicking off their Spring Drive on Monday, March 6th.

The items needed most are new socks and underwear in all sizes, hooded sweatshirts, full-size hygiene products, and gift cards to local eateries, such as Subway and McDonald's.

Drop off your donations at Rancho Cordova City Hall, 2729 Prospect Park Drive, from March 6th through April 7th. Cash and check donations are also accepted. 

Scholarship Available for High School Seniors

Are you a Rancho Cordova resident seeking funding for college? Applications are now being accepted for the City of Rancho Cordova's 2017 Community Pride Scholarship.  The $500 Scholarship is available to Rancho Cordova residents graduating from high school during the 2016-2017 academic year who demonstrate pride in their community and ambition to succeed.

Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and submit a 700-word essay, two letters of recommendation, and an application by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 21, 2017.

The Community Pride Scholarship program was established in 2009 to demonstrate support by City employees for youth and education in Rancho Cordova, and to provide opportunities for local youth to attend college. View the application form and more information online at www.cityofranchocordova.org/scholarship .
Honoring Volunteers in Rancho Cordova

Get your golden ticket and celebrate with the Cordova Community Council on Friday, March 10th during the 18th Annual Community Volunteer Awards. An inspiring group of volunteers and organizations will be honored during an elaborate Willy Wonka-themed party. Hosted by Good Day Sacramento anchor Ken Rudulph, the theme will be brought to life by an act featuring songs performed by students from Sunrise Elementary School. Congratulations to the winners!

March Madness Tournament

Be a part of the madness and register your team before the shot clock expires! The Rancho Cordova Police Activities League (PAL) is holding a 3-on-3 basketball tournament at Mitchell Middle School the morning of Saturday, March 18th. This fun tournament is open for boys and girls in fourth through eighth grade and all players will receive a free t-shirt and lunch. Have a four-player team in mind? Register by March 10th to save your spot! Single players can also sign up and will be placed on teams closest to their grade level.

Celebrate California Arbor Week

Celebrate California Arbor Week from March 7th - 14th by getting  ready for spring and planting a free tree at your home , church , or businessThrough a partnership with the Sacramento Tree Foundation and SMUD, and with the support of a grant from the City of Rancho Cordova's Community Enhancement Fund, Rancho Cordova residents are eligible for up to 10 FREE trees per property, plus assistance with planting and irrigation.

Do you live in the Cordova Meadows, Cordova Gardens, or Sunriver areas? Tree planting projects are coming to your neighborhood this spring!  The Cordova Gardens and Cordova Meadows neighborhoods have planting events scheduled for April 8th. Sign up by March 3rd. Sunriver has a planting event scheduled for April 22nd. Sign up by March 14th.

Neighborhood Services Seeking Volunteers

The City of Rancho Cordova's Neighborhood Services division needs your support! N eighborhood Services focuses on preserving and revitalizing Rancho Cordova neighborhoods and helping residents to access City services and programs with their three divisions: Animal Services, Code Enforcement, and Volunteers in Neighborhood Services (VINS). They are seeking individuals to volunteer two days a week for about 3 - 4 hours each day. Individuals should:
  • Communicate clearly
  • Have a clean driving record and a vehicle
  • Have basic computer skills
  • Be knowledgeable about Rancho Cordova
Tasks would include posting notices in the community, data entry, and preparing for large mail campaigns. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Lorianne Ulm at lulm@cityofranchocordova or at (916) 851-8755.

Airshow Sneak Peek

On Saturday, April 15th, the California Capital Airshow will feature a one day only, full aerial demonstration by the French Air Force's elite "Patrouille de France" at Mather Airport. Sacramento is one of only six cities in the country to host this extraordinary 8-ship military jet demonstration team and the only city in the western United States!

The last time the French team visited the United States was over 30 years ago, and you do not want to miss this performance! This show in April commemorates the 100th anniversary of United States entering World War I to support our European allies.
