Spring 2017 Learning Series
The Eldredge
Public Library in Chatham is offering 20 courses for its Spring Learning Series, the largest offering in the history of the program. These courses, taught by local experts (and some local celebrities), range from one to ten weeks, and are offered for a $15 donation.
Music lovers can hear presentations by Jung Ho Pak, other members of the Cape Symphony and Conservatory, or learn about music history from Cape Cod soprano Joan Kirchner. Several history courses are offered, including presentations by CBS correspondent Morton Dean and award-winning author Steven Kinzer. Golf, literature, nature, film, art and comparative religion are just some of the other offerings. Some of the most popular courses have limited enrollment. Registration is open now.

Welcome Spring!
by Kerry Brown, Friends President
As I write this letter, the wind is whistling, the snow is swirling, and winter is having its way with Chatham. However, the Library is open and very busy as usual. For instance, recently the
Trustees, the Friends, and the staff hosted a reception for the Town Manager, the Town Finance Director, the Board of Selectmen, and the town
's Finance Committee members; a getting-to-know-you session to acquaint our town officials more intimately with the programs and services offered at the Library. A highlight of the evening was Tammy DePasquale's power point presentation about the Youth Services programs.
This fall we have been especially gratified by the following developments:
the steadily increasing number of those joining the Friends of the Library;
the continuing positive response to the Learning Series;
and the success of the Book Sale
As we look to the near future, we have several projects in sight including the purchase of an Optelec Clearview Speech Desktop Video Magnifier machine to assist patrons who are visually impaired; the purchase of staff and public computers and a printer; and more ways to support the
Youth Services Department. We continue to be grateful for the ways our members and the community have supported such projects

Get the Inside Scoop on Forthcoming Books by Irene Gillies, Library Director
Spring is definitely in the air! With spring comes spring cleaning and donations to the Friends of the Library Book Sale come flying in, just as publishers' new offerings are released in the rush to be included on this year's lists o
f summer must-reads. This is a great time to browse our used book sale, but it's also a good time to browse (and request!) titles to be released in the next few months.
How can you browse the hottest upcoming books? Through CLAMS, of course! Simply go to www.clamsnet.org and scan the choices at the bottom of the page. Click on Browse Lists, choose Coming Soon, select the type you're looking for (Fiction, Nonfiction, DVD, etc.), and up pops the list of things that are on order but not yet available. If something strikes your fancy, click on the title and you will be taken to the CLAMS catalog, where you'll find more information about the title, and have the opportunity to place a request now for the item when it becomes available.

The Year of the Reader by Tammy DePasquale, Youth Services Librarian
So, I'm between books. Avid readers understand this "place" or this feeling of angst. There is a pile of books on my desk, nightstand, and coffee table each with titles ready to be opened and welcomed into my reading heart. Yet, I'm not ready, and no starred review or enthusiastic recommendation is going to make me move on...not yet. I'm still missing that last cast of characters that became my temporary second family. I'm still wondering what's next for them. That is the power of a great book.
I just finished rereading the 2017 Newbery Honor winner Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk in anticipation of her
visit to the EPL in February. I loved the book the first time I read it and enjoyed it even more upon the second reading. I know myself well enough that I will no doubt read it again with Ms. Wolk's voice providing an even deeper level
of appreciation. But, what surprised me was my desire to return t
o Maycomb County, that southern setting of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. And, just like that I realized that Wolf Hollow would join my inner bookshelf, the one that holds my favorite characters, places, and memories.
I'm what Donalyn Miller, also known as "The Book Whisperer" calls a "wild reader," a lifelong reader who reads "because reading is as important to them as eating and sleeping and breathing." As the Youth Services Librarian at the Eldredge, that is the life I want for every young patron who visits the library.
I'm not alone in my passion for reading. My colleagues at the EPL are just as enthusiastic about reading and its long-term benefits, so much so that we are declaring 2017 "The Year of the Reader." Stay tuned for special events, programming, and activities that will highlight the EPL's resources and services, town-wide collaboration that will reach out to all ages, abilities and interests, and many more opportunities that will highlight not only the importance of reading, but also the pleasure it brings to a community of readers.
Don't forget, you can now follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest!
