In Like a Lion
Nearly 20 years ago, when I was tapped to be on the Board of Directors for the Santa Barbara Downtown Organization, I accepted with a huge sense of pride. Now, as a staff member of what we affectionately call "Downtown SB," I wake up every morning with stirrings of that same pride, knowing that we all bop into our office with an amazing goal: supporting our Downtown SB members.
To be here in this City, working for this organization, I'm thrilled anew to help plan our 50th Anniversary! To celebrate, we are producing a once-in-our-lifetime 50th Anniversary Gala, Presented by the Fess Parker Doubletree Resort, on Wednesday, April 12th.
Fifty years! That milestone alone is reason enough to raise a glass. But the Gala program is what I find the most thrilling - we plan to "re-honor" our 40 years' worth of "Citizens of the Year" during the evening, showcasing their profiles and contributions on an Honor Wall and with specifically sponsored tables at dinner.
Our Citizen of the Year honorees have
included civic leaders, social advocates, visionaries, members of the media and the arts community, and citizens who have made their mark in our community. Leading the Gala are Honorary Co-Chairs Mayor Helene Schneider and our 2004 Citizen of the Year, Roger Durling of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Bringing many of these amazing people together, to thank and honor them again, is, well, yet another huge source of pride for all of us.

Save the Date: Downtown SB 50th Anniversary Gala!
It's our Big 5-0, and you're invited!
You may not remember Downtown Santa Barbara, circa 1967. No Paseo Nuevo Shopping Mall, parallel parking on State Street, people gazed into shop windows, not down at small handheld devices. And the downtown businesses came together for the first time as a community, to create the Downtown Organization of Santa Barbara. Now, fifty years later, Downtown Santa Barbara is set to share history and celebrate milestones, accomplishments and successes, with the
"Downtown Santa Barbara 50th Anniversary Gala" Presented by the Fess Parker Doubletree Resort, on Wednesday evening, April 12, 2017.
The evening begins with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres in the stunning rotunda of The Fess Parker Doubletree Resort. Guests may explore the Honor Wall sponsored by Southern California Edison - a visual representation of forty years of past "Citizens of the Year" and their contributions. Following the cocktail hour, guests adjourn to the Grand Ballroom for a three-course gourmet dinner, along with a captivating program celebrating our rich history, dedicated leadership, and timeless efforts to revitalize Downtown Santa Barbara. The Gala concludes with the announcement of the Harriet Miller Youth Leadership Award, the Downtown Business Champion of the Year, the George Gerth Volunteer of the Year and the 2016 Citizen of the Year.

Summer Solstice returns this year with the theme: Celebrating Unity! Vote for your favorite artwork and meet the artists who have submitted for the Solstice 2017 poster and t-shirt contest, at Casa Gallery @ Voice Magazine (23 E. Canon Perdido).

Becker Studios' Millworks (412 E. Haley, Studio 3) features the mixed-media paintings of Meghan Hart and the visually elegant photographs for Andrew Thill.

Sullivan Goss (11 E. Anapamu) celebrates the opening of Hank Pitcher: Look Out, the artist's first solo show in three years.

Artists Jonathan Smith and Kym Cochran unveil "1925," a public artwork about the devastating earthquake that destroyed 85% of downtown Santa Barbara. Ribbon cutting, refreshments, presentations by the artists start at 5 pm. Digital video projections illuminate the Jardin de las Granadas (21 E. Anapamu). Period attire encouraged.

Santa Barbara Museum of Art presents Members of Opera Santa Barbara's Mosher Studio Artists program perform Leos Janáček's song cycle "Diary of One Who Disappeared" in the Museum galleries (5:30 PM).
Performances:
Onetwo Tree, based in Santa Barbara, has roots that stem from the Hawaiian Islands, to the South American coast, to the Jersey shore. With this flavorful mix of cultures, these musicians are influenced by UB40 and know how to hold down a reggae groove. (Marshalls Patio, 900 State)

Non-Profits to Know:
SBCC Foundation
"To support SBCC students and programs through sustained philanthropy."
The SBCC Foundation was established in 1976 to provide Santa Barbara City College with private philanthropic support. The foundation acts in partnership with the college and bridges the gap between available public funding and institutional need, as determined by the college leadership. Serving as the vehicle through which individuals and organizations may invest in the college, the foundation fuels the educational excellence that has long been the hallmark of SBCC.
The SBCC Foundation provides more than $4 million annually for student success programs, scholarships, book grants, and other critical needs of the college in order to support SBCC students as they prepare for careers, transfer to four-year universities, and pursue lifelong learning goals.
The SBCC Promise will provide any local student who completes their secondary education within the Santa Barbara Community College District with the opportunity to attend SBCC full-time for two years free of charge. The Promise, a project of the SBCC Foundation, will use privately raised funds to cover all enrollment and required fees, books, and supplies in an effort to remove economic barriers, making our community's college fully accessible to all local students.
