BOROUGH OF KUTZTOWN WWTP MEETING Kutztown
On Friday, November 18, 2016, the Borough of Kutztown Wastewater Treatment Plant hosted the Quarterly Meeting & Plant Tour. The total number of Vendors & Sponsors this year was 79, and the sun was shining for the 227 people that attended the meeting.  Many thanks go out to Jarrad Burkert,
the Plant Manager, and his great staff, for hosting the event; the plant looked great. In particular, everybody loved those egg-shaped digesters, they are all they were cracked up to be, and that's no yoke.

A tasty lunch, business meeting, and awards ceremony followed the networking and plant tour. During lunch, my very excellent friend,  Justin J. Mendinsky, P.E., Water & Wastewater Project Manager at Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc., gave a very informative presentation on Kutztown Borough's Anaerobic Digester Insulation Replacement Project.

The awards ceremony was great and many hard-working, deserving individuals, groups and companies were recognized. Special thanks to Rebecca Pickering and Marykay for putting together the great-looking Awards Booklet. Phil Schwartz (that's me!) looked resplendent (look it up, I had to) in his suit with that blue shirt and purple tie thanks to his fashion coordinators, Past Presidents Gus Belmont and Chris Lenton.

Many thanks again to all vendors and sponsors, including the companies listed below:

CITY OF EASTON MEETING Easton
The March EPWPCOA Meeting and Plant Tour will be held at the Easton Area Joint Sewer Authority on Friday, March 17, 2017. The Registration Deadline is Friday, March 3, 2017!   Click   here  for the Announcement.

About Easton Area Joint Sewer Authority (EAJSA)
The Easton Area Joint Sewer Authority (EAJSA) provides wastewater conveyance and treatment for its member municipalities in the Easton area of Northampton County.  The EAJSA member municipalities are:  the City of Easton (City), the Borough of West Easton, the Township of Forks, the Township of Palmer, the Borough of Tatamy and the Borough of Wilson.  The EAJSA also treats wastewater from the following non-member municipalities: Townships of Williams, Lower Nazareth and Bethlehem and the Borough of Glendon.  The EAJSA has a long term lease with the City for management of the wastewater plant, three large pumping stations and force mains and has an agreement with the City to provide staff for operation of these facilities.

The EAJSA has also constructed its own sewage facilities, is responsible for common lines in the service area, the industrial pretreatment program in the service area and is the NPDES permit holder.  The plant was originally constructed in the early 1950s and major renovation projects were undertaken in 1978, 1988, 1998 and during the last five years. The plant is permitted for a wastewater flow of 10.0 mgd and an average influent organic loading of 20,000 pounds of BOD 5 per day, employs physical and biological processes to achieve the required treatment levels.

The plant's treatment process consists of grit removal and screening, primary clarification, secondary biological treatment through an oxidation ditch process, secondary clarification, disinfection using sodium hypochlorite and dechlorination using sodium bisulfite.  Sludge is handled through two stage anaerobic digestion.  Primary sludge is pumped directly to the digesters.  Secondary (or waste activated) sludge is thickened by a gravity belt thickener prior to digestion.  All digested sludge is dewatered by centrifuges.  The dewatered sludge is then landfilled.

A FAREWELL FROM PHIL Phil
Thanks for a Great Year

Dear EPWPCOA members,

I just wanted to take a brief moment to thank you all for a great 2016 as I served as your President.  I have been involved in the Eastern Section for over 15 years in various capacities as a Vendor, Committee Member and the last three years as I went through the Chairs to the Presidency.

The Association has been a fantastic organization to be a part of all those years as I have made many new friends and connections. I plan to continue to be active and look forward to many educational, fun and rewarding future meetings and events.

Lastly, as everyone knows, Marykay is the one who does all the hard work to hold this organization together. Without her, none of this would be possible. ( Does this sound like I'm accepting an Academy Award?)

So, thank you Marykay, the Board, all the Committees and the General Membership for an excellent 2016. Happy New Year and good luck to Dale Miller, David Kershner and John Troutman.
