They will also gain experience with strategies through modeling and discussion for eliciting students' and teachers' ideas. This will enable the participant to make informed instructional decisions based on where students and teachers are in their thinking at any point during an instructional sequence. Participants will be guided through the use of a formative assessment framework that links assessment, instruction, and learning targets. This session will focus on academic language and literacy development focused on the most important and challenging ELA and ELD Standards. The session will provide a range of experiences and video clips that model instructional activities. These activities embody three key principles of communicativeness needed for maximizing the development of language that students need in school and beyond. The day will also be framed around three high-impact practices: using complex text, fortifying oral and written output, and fostering constructive conversations. Teachers will have time to observe and engage in activities, as well as reflect on how to weave them into their curricula and lessons. Along the way we will spend time honing our skills for assessing oral language and conversations across content areas.
