A Message from the Executive Director

I am pleased to highlight a number of EPIC activities and partnerships that took place in February.

Firstly though, we welcome our Regional Innovation Centre, WEtech Alliance, to their new location at EPICentre. A welcoming Open House took place on March 1st, 2017 to celebrate this collaboration.

In February, we hosted a number of legal information workshops and look forward to hosting more of these workshops, in collaboration with LTEC, in March.

On the teaching front, we will work with Odette to help roll out their entrepreneurial minor for non-business students across campus. This minor will provide enhanced experiential learning curriculum options for students, and be useful whether they work for themselves or for others upon graduation.  In order to develop an entrepreneurial and innovative mindset, it's necessary to engage youth both in-class and outside of class!

We have also become involved in a partnership of researchers and community organizations led by York University Professor, Valerie Preston, and funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council ($2.5 million over 5 years) that will investigate Migrant Resilience in Canada. Reza Shahbazi of the New Canadians' Centre of Excellence will join me as Co-chairs of the Windsor City network. Involving the local government and immigration partnership, the network will develop a research program around the resilience of international students and immigrants and their economic and entrepreneurial value to the community.

Finally, we are partnering with Odette and with the Faculty of Law to develop networks of entrepreneurial alumni in Toronto.  On April 27, we will partner with the faculties and with the MBA/JD Student Association to host an inaugural meeting of the UWindsor MBA/JD alumni network. Individuals with MBA/JDs are extremely entrepreneurial and many have been involved in developing the EPICentre as you now know it.

On April 28, we intend to host a breakfast meeting with alumni of the CBAR/IPLIN/CEL/EPIC consulting teams. As students, these alumni experimented and built experiential consulting courses that continue to provide real value to our local business community.

We look forward to announcing more partnerships in March!

Thank You to EPICentre Volunteer Mentors

On January 30, 2017, EPICentre hosted a networking night for its volunteer mentors from all over Windsor-Essex to meet with EPICentre startups. In addition to networking with each other, the networking night created an avenue for mentors to watch the startups' pitches and to learn more about their businesses. EPICentre's volunteer mentors are categorized into general or baseline mentors, and subject matter experts. Baseline mentors typically provide general business advice to startups and guide them through their milestones, while subject matter experts are experts in a specific field who will provide advice to startups on an as-needed basis. EPICentre would like to give a shout out to its mentors and subject matter experts for coming to the networking night and committing to assist our startups grow their ventures!  Thank you!

EPICentre at the Movies

On March 3rd, EPICentre will be premiering a 30-second ad at Lakeshore Cinemas in Tecumseh during the pre-show for Logan and various other movies. The ad will run for three months, starting at the beginning of March until the end of May.

Come out and support EPICentre, order some popcorn and enjoy the show!

EPICentre welcomes WEtech Alliance

It's official! WEtech Alliance, Windsor's Regional Tech Innovation Centre, has officially made the move to their new home here at the Entrepreneurship Practice and Innovation Centre on the University of Windsor campus.

The EPICentre team would like to welcome WEtech and look forward to collaborating on a variety of entrepreneurship-related projects in the future.

Marketing class takes on startup projects

This semester, EPICentre incubator members had the opportunity to work with students from the Odette School of Business to help drive their startups forward. Approximately 20 upper-year marketing students enrolled in Dr. David Hutchinson's Marketing Strategy and Planning class are taking a practical approach to the course, offering hands-on marketing insight and services to EPICentre incubator members.

Each venture has their own marketing initiatives. Marketing students are working in teams to fulfill each unique need over the course of the semester, with a final presentation day set for the end of March. This partnership is one of many benefits to our incubator members on their entrepreneurial pathway to success and also benefits students through experiential learning!
