Letter from Laurie
Dear Friend,

Reflecting on our history as a city and nation, often cultivates a deeper appreciation for the heroes and sheroes whose sacrifices paved the way for today's opportunities. It is also a reminder of our collective responsibility to advance their work for the next generation.

In the past two months, our nation has embarked upon the Civil Rights Movement of the 21st Century. We cannot go forward - divided across racial, ethnic, and gender lines - until we recognize that we are all Americans.

Despite the divisive policies of the current presidential administration, I am proud that New Yorkers remain united against Islamophobia, xenophobia, racism, sexism, and will continue to uphold human rights for all -  including members of the LGBTQ community and gender non-confirming individuals. We will not stand for injustice.

The 35th Council District is home to a diverse population of New Yorkers whose contributions are invaluable. I am proud to represent the neighborhoods of Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, and parts of Bedford-Stuyvesant.

This Thursday, I invite you to join us for "Imagining the Future of Crown Heights through the Eyes of our Youth," which will be an inter-generational panel discussion about the issues and opportunities in Crown Heights, focusing on the youth perspective. This will be an interactive event where parents, children, and young adults can share their thoughts and exchange ideas on the community, Additionally, there will be performances by local youth groups. I encourage you to attend as a family.

SAVE THE DATE: District 35 Participatory Budgeting Vote Week is March 27 - April 2, 2017.  This year, we have nine projects ranging from improvements in schools, housing, MTA, and streets on the    ballot.  You can vote for up to four projects.  Projects that receive the largest amount of votes will receive capital funding! We are seeking outreach volunteers, poll site workers, data entry assistants, interpreters and translators now through March! All ages 13 and up are welcome to come out and volunteer.

Your input and continued engagement is essential to our progress as a district, city, and state. I hope that you will continue to work collaboratively with my office, exchanging ideas and solutions that will propel us forward and upward.

Yours in Partnership,
Laurie A. Cumbo
