Program Ideas
Need funding for an event? Sustainability themed programs should fill out the Sustainability Program Funding application.  The Center for Sustainable Communities and Wellness Department will be reviewing applications frequently, but it is best to apply at least two weeks ahead of your program.
Snowshoeing.  Take advantage of the winter weather for a new outdoor activity- snowshoeing. Luther Outdoor Recreation has a large variety of gear that is free for students to rent! Check out their inventory list, get a group together, and hit the trails for some winter fun before all the snow melts!

Sustainability Trivia Night.  Create your own jeopardy-style trivia night for your residents! Categories can include different areas of sustainability on campus, including energy, food, recycling, and Luther's natural areas; create your own questions by looking at our different webpages! If you are interested in hosting this event, Sustainability can even donate some unique prizes for the winners!
Features and Updates
Elementary School Proposal on Anderson Prairie. The Luther College administration and Land Use Committee are currently considering a proposal from the Decorah School Board about the potential construction of a new elementary school on college lands. The site under consideration is a 28-year old prairie reconstruction, known as Anderson Prairie, located across from the main entrance to central campus on College Drive and Ridge Road. As per the Land Use Plan, the Land Use Committee is tasked with reviewing proposals that impact the ecology of Luther's natural areas. The committee has constructed an Elementary School Proposal webpage with information on the proposal and the review process, as well as a space for comments to be submitted. We would like to invite students to share their opinion via the webpage, or attend a discussion/forum held on campus on February 16th at 6:00pm in Valders 206.

New Food Pulper in the Cafeteria. In a collaborative project between the Center for Sustainable Communities and Luther College Dining Services, a food waste pulper was installed in the Cafeteria dish room over Winter Break to help divert more food waste to the compost. All food scraps (including meat and dairy products) can go through the pulper; moisture is removed and the scraps are turned into pulverized bits that break down much faster in our compost pile. Our goal is that by May 2018, 90% of all food waste will be taken to the compost pile, rather than to the landfill. To read more about the pulper and other food waste reduction initiatives, visit the Sustainability News blog post
Tips for a Greener Residence Hall
Do you take the elevator between floors in your residence hall? Challenge yourself and your residents to use the elevators only when necessary! Climbing stairs can help you burn calories and meet your step goal for the day, and can lower energy usage.
