Maybe that is why the use is on the rise. Although e-cigarette vapor does not contain the tar currently responsible for most lung cancer and other lung diseases, it has been shown to contain known carcinogens and toxic chemicals (such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde), as well as potentially toxic metal nanoparticles from the vaporizing mechanism. YIKES!

Say It In Numbers
In the 2016 Wisconsin Public Health Report for Waukesha County, alcohol and drug abuse was listed as an underlying factor in: 54 deaths listing Alcohol use, 423 deaths for Tobacco use and 47 deaths for " Other drugs". 

The Waukesha County Community Health Survey Summary states that in 2015, 29% of adult respondents were binge drinkers in the past month. Respondents who were male, 35 to 44 years old or in the middle 20% household income bracket were more likely to have binged at least once in the past month. This percentage of binger drinkers continues to climb from 2003, which was 16%. Waukesha County is higher than the state at 23% and the Nation at 17%.

FEDERAL UPDATE$
The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) signed into law on July 22, 2016 and "establishes a comprehensive, coordinated, balanced strategy through enhanced grant programs that would expand prevention and education efforts while also promoting treatment and recovery."  Grants will be available through the Federal offices of: ONDCP (1), HHS (6), SAMHSA (2) and DOJ (2).  As of March 1, 2017, the current Administration has not changed the amount of money to be awarded in each grant.  For more specific information on what programs are to be funded click here.
WISCONSIN UPDATE$

A November 2016 report by WI Department of Health Services Select Opioid-Related Morbidity and Mortality Data for Wisconsin provides statewide and county-level data on opioid-related deaths and hospital visits; neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), in which an infant is born with withdrawal symptoms from substances taken by the mother; and data on ambulance runs in which naloxone, a medication used to reverse opioid overdose, was administered.

Genesis House, a program of Lutheran Social Services, will  move to a new facility in Pewaukee later this year where they will expand programming to include Medically Monitored Treatment (MMT), increase the number of beds, and expand our program to include women. The new name will be Aspen Center . AWESOME !

Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment is hosting "Conversations with Scientists | NEUROSCIENCE: Your Amazing Brain".The 4-part speaker series will be Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:30pm starting March 15 2017, and running through April 5, 2017  with a presentation on addiction and chronic pain.  While it’s a free program, space is limited, so people are encouraged to register early.
