Trinity Tidbits-Lent Week 3
|
|
On Fridays during Lent, I will be leading the devotional commonly called 'The Stations of the Cross.' This devotional practice dates back at least to the fifth century, when several 'stations' were erected in Bologna. At Noon on Fridays, join me and the others who will take time to meditate on our Lord's passion and the events leading up to his death. Lent is a season of 'dying to ourselves', and by meditating on the Lord's death, we are inspired to continually die to ourselves as we move towards Easter. Again, I ask you to join us on Fridays at Noon.

SERVICES OF CHORAL EVENSONG
Choral Evensong will be sung at 6 pm on Sunday 19 March. There will be music by Gibbons, JS Bach, Maxine Thevenot and C.H.H. Parry, plus Lenten congregational hymns. The service will be followed by a reception in Kelly Hall at about 6:45 pm. All are welcome!
The Cantata "Aus der tiefen rufe ich" by J.S. Bach will be sung by the Evensong Choir as part of a service of preparation for Holy Week. This will be at 6 pm on Palm Sunday, April 9, and will replace April's Evensong. The Cantata was probably written in 1708; the text, which on this occasion will be sung in English as part of a service of worship, is based on Luther's translation of Psalm 130.

TOTH Elders to Meet March 27 at 10:30am
The TOTH Elder Group will meet on Monday, March 27, in Sherrill Hall at 10:30 a.m.
The program will be presented by Cindy Leyba, SUN PATH Program Specialist from UNM Los Alamos. SUN PATH is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration.
Ms. Leyba oversees the funding of both the Personal Care Attendant (PCA) and the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) programs. Long-time TOTH member Barbara Stoddard provided seed money for the Personal Care Attendant program which recently held its first graduation of 4 students. PCA is a one semester course including 32 hours of clinical training which can be completed at Sombrillo/Aspen Ridge. Most recently, UNM Los Alamos began offering the Certified Nursing Assistant program which is an advanced level to the PCA. Since our group is interested in funding a scholarship and/or underwriting certain costs leading to completion of these programs, Ms. Leyba will give an overview of the programs and outline the grants/funding already in place or about to expire.
Refreshments will be served and all are invited to attend.

"The Gospel of Mark" returns April 8
Jeff Favorite will perform his dramatization of the Gospel of Mark on April 8 at 6:30pm in Kelly Hall. This will be a community event with dessert and conversation. Mark your calendars now, and invite your friends of all ages.

A Call for Volunteers March 18
Teens. Youth Groups. Boy Scouts. Girl Scouts .Habitat for Humanity - Espanola Valley and Los Alamos needs volunteers 16 years and older to help with "A Brush with Kindness" on Saturday 18 March at Ivette's house in Los Alamos. Volunteers will help clean up yard waste and perform simple exterior jobs. Work crews will work 9 AM - 4 PM with one hour for lunch, which will be provided. Certificates for community service hours will be available at the end of the day. NOTE: Volunteers 18 years and older are needed to work on the Habitat home construction project beginning in April in Espanola. Youth, please bring your parents. 2017 Woman2Woman Mini-Conference March 18 in Los Alamos
The Los Alamos Church of Christ will host their fifth Woman2Woman mini-conference on Saturday, March 18, 2017, part of their "Fruit of the Spirit" series. They cordially invite the women of TOTH, other churches and friends to attend. The hope is to bring together the women of Los Alamos for mutual edification and support in living for Christ. The theme this year is Ripples of Kindness, with a focus on how to practice Godly kindness. "The one who despises his neighbor sins, but whoever shows kindness to the poor will be happy." (Proverbs 14:21). The mini-conference will include Bible study, discussion, worship, Christian fellowship, spiritual uplifting and a complimentary brunch. For more information, call 695-5890.

March 25 -- April 2 Mexico Mission Trip holds Auction Sunday the 12th!
32nd Annual United Church Mission Trip to Puerto Peñasco, Sonora
During Spring Break, March 25 - April 2, almost 60 youth and adults will be traveling to Mexico to build houses for families living in need. Puerto Peñasco is a resort town on the Sea of Cortez, south of Phoenix, Arizona. Our groups have been working in Puerto Peñasco since 2009. The area has had its difficulties, but in recent years we have seen hopeful signs, including renewed construction on resort high rises. Many of our families work in the resort industry.
We work through Amor Ministries, which provides a camp facility and works with local pastors to determine the work projects. When we arrive, all of the building materials will be ready for us to jump in. We expect to build 3 houses for local families. The houses are 11' x 22', with concrete floor, wood frame walls with stucco, and plywood roof. The homeowners often work alongside our group - especially the children!
You can help support this great project by donating items to our MEXICO MISSION AUCTION to be held March 12th. (See more info on pages 8 & 9) We also need people to attend the auction and buy all the great stuff! Another way to help is to donate to the trip or to the Scholarship Fund to help campers attend.

March 26 "Air & Hammers" Concert in Santa Fe
Southwest Arts presents Air & Hammers in concert Sunday, March 26th at 3 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 1701 Arroyo Chamiso. Air & Hammers is a duo consisting of acclaimed British baritone Edmund Connolly and international concert organist and pianist Maxine Thevenot. They'll offer a program of song repertoire including music by Vaughan Willams, Finzi, Faure, Britten, and Canadian composer Andrew Ager. Tickets: $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, $5 for students 12 and up, and free for children under 12. They are available at SouthwestArts.org and at the door.

[Episcopal Church Office of Public Affairs press release] The Episcopal Church Board for Transition Ministry has issued an invitation to the church to participate "to think out loud about how we bring ordained leaders to our churches."
Among the topics explored in the document are the aging church, dual-call couples, energy beyond the parish, diversifying our clergy, interim ministries, part-time clergy leadership, full-communion partners, diversity is reality and "calling" is not "hiring."

ANGLICANS AND LUTHERANS MARK THE REFORMATION'S 500TH ANNIVERSARY WITH BIBLICAL REFLECTIONS
[Anglican Communion News Service] Anglicans and Lutherans from around the world have prepared 42 biblical
reflections which are suitable for a Lenten study program, to mark together the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.
The authors represent a balance of global Anglicanism and Global Lutheranism, and include both ordained and lay people, women and men.
Although suitable for a Lenten study programme, the reflections can also be used at any other time of the year and it is the hope of the Anglican Lutheran International Co-ordinating Committee that the reflections will continue to be used long after 2017. They are being posted day by day throughout Lent on the websites of both The Lutheran World Federation and the Anglican Communion.
The reflections are guided by The Lutheran World Federation's overarching theme for the 2017 commemoration: "Liberated by God's Grace", with its three sub-themes, "Salvation: Not for Sale", "Human beings: Not for Sale", and "Creation: Not for Sale". Rather than simply focussing on the events of the sixteenth century, like the LWF themes, these reflections focus on what Reformation in its broadest sense means for Christians today.
The authors represent a balance of global Anglicanism and Global Lutheranism, and include both ordained and lay people, women and men.
The Director of Unity, Faith and Order at the Anglican Communion, the Revd John Gibaut has contributed one of the reflections: "This timely volume brings together diverse Anglican and Lutheran voices from around the world in wondrous harmony, as we reflect together on what reformation and renewal mean for Christians today and into our common future. For Anglicans, the volume is an experience of "receptive ecumenism" and a way to engage in the Lutheran World's Federation's 2017 theme, "Liberated by God's Grace".
