UBCM is pleased to convey our 2017 Provincial Election Platform to our membership. The platform centres on five overarching themes: finance, infrastructure, protective service costs, climate action and housing. Memorial for George Ferguson

Abbotsford politician George Ferguson died last week at the age of 91. Prior to retiring in 2008, Mr. Ferguson served for 33 years as Mayor of Abbotsford, during which time he oversaw the amalgamation of the districts of Sumas and Abbotsford and was involved in the purchasing of the Abbotsford Airport lands from the federal government. His funeral service for will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 18, at Tradex in Abbotsford.

UBCM Executive Meeting Highlights

Executive members convened in Victoria over February 22-24 to hold their quarterly Committee and board meetings. The Executive also undertook extensive outreach with Cabinet ministers and MLAs to share UBCM's 2017 Provincial Election Platform Our Communities: Building BC's Foundation.

In Memoriam: Councillor Owen Dickie

Two term Lake Country councillor Owen Dickie passed away on March 6, 2017 succumbing to melanoma. Prior to securing a seat on council in 2011 and being re-elected in 2014, Dickie had owned a building inspection business. Read more
 
Representative Needed for BC Road Safety Strategy

UBCM is seeking a local government staff representative, who has expertise in the development of road safety strategies and related programs, to join the provincial government's BC Road Safety Strategy Safe Roads and Communities Committee.

Age-friendly BC Community Recognition 2017
 
The Age-friendly BC (AFBC) recognition program is a partnership between the BC Healthy Communities Society and the Ministry of Health designed to encourage communities to take action towards becoming age-friendly. The deadline for local governments to apply for recognition as an AFBC community has been extended to May 31, 2017. Read more
