THIS SUNDAY IN WORSHIP
FEBRUARY 26, 2017

Sermon: Jonathan Morris
New Year, Same Promises: "God's Promise of Guidance"

Scripture: Matthew 5:13-20 (NRSV)

We are saved by grace-and yet, what next?  How do we live in response to this extraordinary gift?  We can choose to live in a way that honors the incredible gift we have been given, and God does not leave us without direction.  The promise of these life-giving mandates does not compromise our freedom.  There is a beautiful tension between obedience and freedom.  The rules, the law, the commandments-the way-is itself a form of grace.  We need a map to guide us.  We need markers reminding us to pursue justice and love kindness, as we walk humbly with our God.

Ash Wednesday Service and Drive-Thru Ashes - March 1
Ash Wednesday (March 1st) marks the beginning of Lent, the 40 day period of prayer and spiritual reflection before Easter.  It emphasizes two themes: our sinfulness before God and our human mortality-helping us to realize that both have been triumphed through the death and resurrection of Jesus.

New this year on Ash Wednesday, we'll be offering a morning Drive-Thru Ashes and Blessings session from 6:30 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. under the Peace Church Portico.  You won't even have to get out of your car.  Pastor LeeAnn will draw the cross of ashes on your forehead and offer a prayer of blessing as you are on your way to work or school.

Then later that evening at 7:00 p.m., don't miss a full Ash Wednesday worship service featuring shared prayers, special music, communion, candlelight and ashes. This service will be family friendly, with a creative version of the traditional imposition of the ashes that all ages can participate in and understand. Childcare will be available in Classroom A for children 5 years old and younger.
Lenten Worship Series & Book Study - March 5
"Restored: Finding Redemption in Our Mess"
This Lent, Look at Your Mess Through Christ's Eyes.
Sometimes we make a mess in our lives and wonder if there is any redemption.  In Restored, author Tom Berlin helps us see our mess through the eyes of Christ to find redemption and spiritual restoration. This six week worship series and book study uses scripture, devotional tools, and the writings of Ignatius of Loyola, John of the Cross, St. Augustine, John Wesley, Evelyn Underhill, and others. Through reflection and meditation on our own brokenness, we focus on the cross as the place where we truly surrender control, leave our mess, and find peace.

Books are now available on the table in the back of the sanctuary for only $10.00.

Habitat at Women Build: Raising Walls, Raising Funds & Raising Spirits! - Build Day March 8
This annual fundraising event with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Orlando is about women in the Orlando community coming together to build homes-and hope. This year's home will be built at Butler's Preserve , in the Malibu Groves area. The build day is on March 8th , with a special Women Build celebration on May 13th.  We will help build a home for Latrina, a dedicated mother of five currently living in a two-bedroom apartment with her three youngest daughters. Latrina is so thankful that she will be able to purchase her own home, something she never dreamed she would be able to do.

Through financial gifts, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build a better life for themselves.   If you would like to help sponsor this event, Peace UMC will match your donation.  You can donate through our church website. Or make your check payable to PUMC with Habitat noted on the memo line (please donate no later than February 26th). We are also looking for a couple women volunteers to participate at the build site on March 8th.  For further information, or if you have questions, please contact Cathy Tschanz at cetschanz@outlook.com.
Dress a Girl Around the World - "Undie Sunday" -  March 19
Our Peace "Dress a Girl Around the World" team makes dresses and dolls for little girls and shorts for little boys who live in poverty around the world.  In addition to basic clothing, they became aware the children are also in need of underpants. So on March 19th, they are sponsoring our first "Undie Sunday" at Peace!   On this day they will be collecting NEW underpants for boys, girls, men, and women.  Please be sure to purchase WHITE underpants only-all sizes are welcome.

Our Dress a Girl team recently delivered dress and short shipments to Guatemala and Nicaragua.  You can be part of this vibrant, life-changing ministry by attending one of their workshops every Tuesday morning in the Peace Youth Room starting at 9:30 a.m.  Don't know how to sew?  No problem, they will teach you-or you can help by cutting fabric or constructing dolls.  For more information, contact Janice Adams at 407-240-9568.
