Header for Changed

I hope you will plan to join us in Lent for our Changed: A Lenten Journey worship series. Every year on Easter we celebrate the change that God made in our world at Easter over 2000 years ago. Easter, when God's own son, Jesus died to restore balance to this broken and hurting world. Jesus died so that we could be forgiven for our shortcomings. Jesus died so that we would finally understand our responsibility to live out his calling on our lives. Jesus died to make it clear to us that we have to make changes in our self-centered lives if we are truly going to be his disciples. The Good News we are called to share is that his death lead to the resurrection and then the gift of the Holy Spirit that guides us on life's journey.

We all know how hard it is to change. Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over, and over again, expecting different results. There is real wisdom in those words. Reflecting on those words will be a good way to begin thinking about how God can change us during Lent. Know this, God is calling us to a "change of heart." And, we know from experience, that nothing will change, unless we change our patterns. To expect different results is insanity.

So if we are going to be the disciples God is calling us to be, if we are going to change our self-centeredness to other centeredness, what must we do? Changed will be about the kind of transformation that will lead to fuller, more meaningful lives for all of us. Join us in worship as we explore transformation and change in John's gospel during Lent.  Changed begins on Ash Wednesday.

En Agape',

DISCIPLES WOMEN PROMOTING CHURCH WORLD SERVICE BLANKET FUND

Have you ever been really cold? So cold that your teeth chattered.
What was that like?
Have you ever awakened in the middle of the night because you felt cold, and reached down to pull up another blanket and then remembered there is no other blanket? Not at the foot of the bed, on a chair or anywhere, so you and your four children huddle under the one blanket you have.
Scenes like this happen more often than we like to imagine. Due to disasters, such as fires, floods, hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes and wars many are left homeless and without shelter, warmth and just the bare necessities.
One way that Church World Service helps those in need in through the CWS Blanket Fund. Blankets are sent to areas of need all over the world. During the first six months of 2016, over 5,000 blankets were sent to 17 states in this country alone to bring relief after disasters and to homeless shelters.
During the month of March the Disciples Women will be promoting the Blanket Fund in our church.
Blankets are $10.00. Our goal is to provide 100 blankets. Cash is acceptable and checks made payable to Slash Christian Church and designated to Blanket Fund. "No one walks away from those in need thinking, "someone else can help." We can help. This is our opportunity to respond compassionately. You will be seeing and hearing more about the Blanket Fund throughout the month of March.

The Disciples Women will be meeting each month through June. No meetings in July and August. Check your church calendar and news for change of dates for some meetings. Remember Disciples Women's continuous project is the collection of items for ACES and we are reminded to bring these items to the regular meetings each month.

Slash Small Groups
Sign up Now for Slash Small Groups

People are getting excited about our new small groups that will be meeting for the first time on the weekend of March 17-19. We hope you will consider taking part in these informal gatherings in the homes of our members. We already have three families set to host this month. Want to participate? You may call the church or sign up at worship this weekend.

The purpose of these groups is twofold.
  • You will get to know other members of our church around the table.
  • Second, these groups can also be a great way for us introduce our unchurched friends to other Slash members.
Slash Church is the place where we reach up, reach out and come together!

General Assembly 17

Be a witness for ONEness!
One of the last things Jesus did with his disciples was to bless them with the priestly prayer that appears in John 17. He prayed that, "I'm praying not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me because of them and their witness about me. The goal is for all of them to become one heart and mind." (The Message)

In July we will gather as ONE for the 2017 General Assembly in Indianapolis. Thousands of Disciples gather from across the United States and Canada to demonstrate our unity in service to the Christ. We will hear inspiring messages, elect a new General Minister and President, hear about the results from Mission First! and learn together.

Bible studies on the theme text (John 17:20-21a) from scholars at Disciple-related seminaries are available online so you can go deeper into the scripture.

Outreach Opportunities

Week of Compassion Offering received - February 19 and 26
Theme for 2017:  "You are here."
"Week of compassion is the relief, refugee and development mission fund of the Christian Church - Disciples of Christ in the United States and Canada.   We seek to equip and empower disciples to alleviate the suffering of others through disaster response, humanitarian aid, sustainable development and the promotion of mission opportunities."

Through your generous giving to the Week of Compassion Offering February 19 and 26, let us work together to relieve hunger and thirst, provide tools to help sustain life, and provide the knowledge needed to continue sustaining life where nature has not been so kind.
Week of compassion helps to provide for the immediate needs after hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and floods as well as providing long term resources in areas where drought is prevalent and tools are not easily available to sustain life.  By giving, You Are Here as your gifts go to work. Let us help to make a difference!

Memory Name Plate for Pavilion - Do you wish you had purchased a memory name plate for someone to be placed on the new pavilion? We are holding open the ordering of those plates through March. So, if you still wish to purchase a plate, pick up a form from the back of the sanctuary and return it with your check by March 31st. A dedication of the pavilion is planned in the spring.
