Poly Robotics Qualifies for Maryland State Championship
The High Tech Parrots have been hard at work! All four of the Poly VEX Robotics teams have qualified for the Maryland State Championships which will be held
March 3-4 at Dundalk Sparrows Point/Technical High School. More than 60 teams will compete and winners will advance to the World Championships April 19-22 in Kentucky, where they will face off with robotics teams from across 34 countries! Wishing them the best of luck!
Poly Student Wins the 2017 Baltimore Brain Bee
Nine students from four area high schools recently competed in the Baltimore
Brain Bee at the JHU School of Education. Poly student Torey Dickson won 1st place and will now compete in the USA National Bee March 17-19! Additionally, he and his teacher have a scholarship to attend the Brain Injury Association of Maryland conference. Congrats to Torey and all of the Poly participants, Poly is happy to display the bee trophy!
Senior Athletes Sign Letters of Intent
Several Poly athletes have made news by signing national letters of intent. Congratulations to: William Henderson (Track and Field) - Penn State University, Nadia Hackett (Track and Field) - UMCP, De'vondre Perry (Basketball) - Temple University, and Barry Amos (Football) - St. Francis, PA.

Wrestling Team Wins Big
In an unexpected finish, the Poly wrestling team took first place in the
District IX Wrestling Championship! Poly placed ahead of Dunbar, the
defending champions. Poly had 4 individuals in championship finals. Congrats to: Terrell Mills (Sr.) (currently ranked in the top 10 in Maryland), Ben Wright (Jr.), Mervyn Crawford (Soph) (currently ranked # 12 in the state) and Tariq Griffin (Jr.). Mervyn Crawford also took home the top honor of "Outstanding Upper Weight" for the tournament. Congrats, team!

Faculty Tribute
"It is with deep sadness that I noted the passing of L. Allen Wittel, Poly's former band director. Mr. Wittel was not only my music teacher in my early student years, he was an early mentor of my music development. He first came into my life as a first grader at Roland Park Elementary school in 1949 when he came into my classroom and played the clarinet for us, while we kept time on rhythm instruments.
Mr. Wittel was most helpful in helping me in this discovery of new music-making, the oboe. It turns out the oboe was a major instrument that he played, so my musical education was greatly enhanced by his vast experience. I graduated from Roland Park and went on, as planned, to Poly in the fall of 1959, enrolled in the B course curriculum. My days were, of course filled with engineering studies, but afternoons were spent hanging around the band room, which in the North Avenue campus, was a big room over the entrance to the auditorium. I played oboe in the concert band, and trombone in the marching band. But as time went on, I became more and more serious about the oboe. Our band director at the time told me about the Deitches Scholarship available to Peabody preparatory dept. to study my instrument. I applied, and won a scholarship. I then looked forward to Saturdays, going downtown to Peabody and taking oboe lessons and musicianship classes. Meanwhile, I was still studying hard in my classes as a junior at Poly. The band director left Poly at the end of that year, and who should come as the new Poly band director, but Mr. Wittel! He was excited to hear about my serious study of the oboe, and continued to give me good personal guidance.
I went on the play in the U.S. Air Force Band, and one of my last concerts with them was in either late July 1970 at the "new" Poly auditorium. Not only did I get to see the new school for the first time, but Mr. Wittle was there. It was the last time I saw him. He was there as the school coordinator for the concert we did. It was a very special time because he got to meet my wife and my two children at the time"
