A Message from the President

Dear women of Impact 100 Greater Indianapolis and our loyal supporters,

Impact 100 Greater Indianapolis president Beth Thomas
It's the year-end holiday season of giving. If you're like me, you enjoy the giving as much as you enjoy the getting, especially when the recipient of a gift expresses happiness and gratitude. That is as good as a gift in return. And, if you're like me, you enjoy giving yourself a little something this time of year, whether it's a little something from the sale rack or some extra pampering.

I think the best way to combine the feeling you get when you give someone the perfect gift and the feeling you get when you give yourself something, is to give to your community. Of course, I think the perfect way to give to your community is to give to Impact 100.

In 2016, Impact 100 Greater Indianapolis members pooled $155,000 and then gave it away to address sex trafficking (IMPACT Program, a collaboration between Ascent 121 and Lutheran Child and Family Services), allow children with special needs a chance to participate in the performing arts (Prism Project at IndyFringe), support art classes for low income students (Art with a Heart), and provide housing for women overcoming addiction (Dove Recovery House).

How much will we grant in 2017? And which nonprofits in our community will receive the 2017 grants? How much will be in the grant pool is always a mystery until we receive our final membership donations on December 31, and who wins the grants is unknown until our annual dinner in June.

As we come to the end of 2016, we look at all that we have accomplished working together. We have granted over $1.75 million to our community. We have involved over 600 women as members. We have given grants of $100,000 or more to 13 nonprofits. We have given smaller grants to 31 nonprofits.

We are in the last few weeks of our 2017 membership drive to fill the 2017 grant pool. That money will go to your community through transformational grants. We are always trying to grow and improve, but we need your help. If you have not yet made your 2017 membership donation, please do so. If you can help us grow our membership by introducing a friend or colleague to Impact 100, there is no better time than now.

Give, and invite others to give. Share that special feeling of giving the perfect gift to your community and to yourself.

Thanks for reading,

Beth Thomas

Please Join Today!

We're getting close to the December 31 deadline for 2017 membership in Impact 100. Join now before time runs out! Here are some important links to help you make your membership or other donation:
We are happy to offer convenient payment methods to our members, but want to remind you that when you choose a payment method that charges a transaction fee, it is greatly appreciated if you add to your donation to help pay those fees (additional fees are also 100% deductible). We understand these fees are a cost of doing business in today's world, but if the donor doesn't pay them, we pay them out of our administrative account. Just to let you know, here are the current transaction fees for the following methods:
  • Charge card: 3.75-4%
  • Stock: $75.00
  • United Way: 20% (the actual percentage varies each year based on the number of designated donations UW receives, but this is an average)
Don't forget about our Shared Membership option, where 2, 3, or 4 women combine their $500, $333, or $250 donations, respectively, to create one $1000 membership.

For more information on becoming a member, please contact Member Chair Terry Mumford at joinus@impact100indy.org .
Focus Area Committee Information

One of the most rewarding aspects of being an Impact 100 member is participating on a committee responsible for choosing a finalist in one of our five Focus Areas. If you'd like to be on a committee, it's important to submit your preferences now, so that committees can be finalized before their first meetings in January.

Please go to the FAC Sign-up Form by January 4, 2017. On this form, you'll be asked to rank your preference and indicate if there are any committees you absolutely cannot sit on due to schedule or conflict of interest. To help you make a decision as to which committees you want to mark on the form, the dates, location and times are provided here.

Shared Memberships and Scholarship Recipient Reception at Rock Steady Boxing

One of the distinguishing features of Impact 100 Greater Indianapolis is our inclusion of Shared Memberships and Scholarships. They have been shown to be key to invigorating and growing our organization. We will celebrate these special members and explain their place in the organization on Wednesday, January 18, 5:30-7:30 pm at Rock Steady Boxing. This event is open to all members and guests interested in knowing more about Impact 100. An evite will go out to members in mid-December. If you do not receive an evite, please RSVP to  joinus@impact100indy.org.

Save the Date!  Our Annual Meeting is June 13 at Ritz Charles in Carmel

The Annual Meeting Committee has completed their research and has announced the date and location for this year's meeting: June 13, 5:30 pm at Ritz Charles Catering in Carmel (12156 N. Meridian St. Carmel, IN  46032). The committee co-chairs Cathy Simmons and Pat Ritz decided to start from scratch in looking for the perfect place this year, considering all options and requirements. After much deliberation and consideration, they selected the Ritz Charles. Invitations and details will be sent in the spring.
New Online Donation

Our new online donation is getting a lot of use. It is convenient and very secure. But did you know that we offer three categories for your online donations?
  • Membership (https://www.impact100indy.org/join/online-form/): Use this link to make your membership donation. You will have the opportunity to add extra funds to our Friends or Scholarship account as part of your membership donation.
  • Friends or Scholarship (https://www.impact100indy.org/join/friends-of-impact/): If you are already a member and want to give more to our Friends Account or Scholarship Account, this link takes you through the steps of making that donation.
  • Tribute or Gift (https://www.impact100indy.org/join/tribute/): Have you ever wanted to give a gift to Impact 100 in tribute or in honor of someone? Or as a gift to someone? This is the online donation form to use. It has been used most recently for gifts in tribute to Yvonne Perkins, a ten-year member who passed away in November. The form allows you to designate this donation to either the Friends or Scholarship fund.
Giving Tuesday and Scholarship Update

#GivingTuesday was a huge success! Through our event at Blind Owl Brewery and our social media outreach, we raised enough money with our donor matches to fund 10 scholarships for our Young Philanthropists Scholarship Program. Women receiving the scholarships will be contacted December 16, and an announcement will go out to the public and on our website the following week.

The Impact 100 Scholarship program invites young philanthropists under the age of 36 to participate as full members in Impact's grant making process. In the past two years, over 20 young women have served on our five grant committees and brought fresh ideas to the discussions. Read our blog about the Scholarship Program ( http://www.impact100indy.org/we-are-now-accepting-applications-to-our-scholarship-program/ ) to learn more.

Even though #GivingTuesday has passed, and we met our goal, you can continue to donate to our Scholarship Program or donate to our Friends Account by going to our  Online Donation Form or printing out our Impact 100 Print Donation Form .
We Had a Blast at Our DIY Holiday Party!

Impact 100 members and guests had a great night on December 7 where we learned how to make fantastic holiday appetizers and create stunning floral arrangements! And we managed to make it happen in our allotted two hours!

Outside the Box, our hosts for the evening, opened their kitchen and their craft room to allow two of our talented board members to teach a little of their knowledge to those in attendance. Andi Cohen (Eat Your Heart Out Catering) showed us how to make an amazing savory bread pudding and a bacon dressing, while Cathy Simmons (CS Accoutrements) showed us how we can make beautiful centerpieces using grocery store flowers. Beth Thomas and Barb Cecil conducted an orientation session for new members, describing how they could make the most of their Impact 100 experience.  New members who were not able to attend can go to our website and view or download the handout for new members.

Thanks to all who attended!
A Successful Nonprofit Information Session

More than 70 representatives from local nonprofits met with the Grants Co-Chairs at the Glendale Library on December 8. After a review of our grant process, those in attendance asked questions of the Co-Chairs, Andi Cohen, Charlitta Winston, and Megan McGuire. Tyler Gough from 2015 winner Indy Urban Acres also spoke to the nonprofits. Then all representatives of Impact 100 left the room to allow the nonprofit representatives to ask Tyler any questions about our granting process they may not have felt comfortable asking with us in the room.
Scholarship Committee Announces 2017 Scholarship Recipients

The applicant pool for the 2017 Impact 100 Young Philanthropist Scholarships was VERY competitive this year. We received 29 high-quality applications for 11 spaces. The most meaningful way to draw distinctions between the applicants was to think about the skill set they would bring to our grant-making process. Therefore, the most competitive applicants had some combination of:
  • Experience in awarding grants or raising funds professionally (and more than just 1-2 years)
  • Experience in other giving circles
  • Formal study of philanthropy
This year's winners, along with their nonprofit or philanthropic affiliation, are:
  1. Jacqueline Ackerman, Women's Philanthropy Institute, Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy
  2. Gabie Benson, MIBOR Foundation
  3. Emily Berger, Indiana Health Care Association/Indiana Health Care Foundation
  4. Catherine Cleary, Marian University
  5. Lindsay Faulkenberg, Kids Voice
  6. Genevieve Gaines, Joy's House
  7. Emily Garrott, TKE Educational Foundation
  8. Lindsey Hill, Tangram
  9. Kristin Hyde, Eskenazi Health Foundation
  10. Faren Jones, Giving Sum board member
  11. Betsy Yeo, W3
Join us in congratulating these young women. Look for one or two to be on your Focus Area Committee, and help us mentor (and be mentored) by these exceptional young women.
Members in the News

Two Impact 100 members were recently honored by the Indianapolis Chapter of AFP for professional fundraisers. Barb Coury was honored as the area's Outstanding Fundraiser, nominated by the American Red Cross, and William G. (posthumously) and Dr. Rose Mays received the Lifetime Achievement Award, nominated by Indiana University and the Indiana University Foundation. We are honored to know both of these outstanding women and salute their recognition as philanthropists.
