My Internship at RHR
by Joe Russell

I would like to start off by saying that I could not have asked for a better intern ship experience.  My experience at RHR was outstanding.  I know that not every student is fortunate enough to obtain an internship that provides as much hands-on experience as RHR, but I wish that every student could.  I was not too familiar with hippotherapy prior to my time at RHR.  I was amazed to see how much it helped each child from body awareness, muscle strength, oral motor function, to even the child's self-confidence, it was truly amazing!

Since the end of my internship in December 2016, I have already gone back to volunteer a few times.  I was also able to bring a few friends along to volunteer and share in my experience.  As I enter the "real world", having this internship experience was good for me to start out as a professional.  I am truly thankful I got to work with the RHR staff; they are truly passionate about the work they do.  I cannot say enough wonderful things about them.  I look forward to coming back as a volunteer whenever I have a chance, especially to see my buddy Small Fry!

Horse of the Month
Que Boy

Que Boy is a 12-year-old haflinger who stands 15 hands high. Que gets his name from the question mark shape of the beautiful white blaze on his face! This month we celebrate Que's 4th anniversary at RHR! Que is the largest member of  our herd and  he is very happy working with our children and adults.  He is extremely gentle, patient, very friendly and loves to give kisses after his sessions. His favorite food is.... anything and everything!

Que is ridden by clients both tall and small and loves to do his job.  He has some quirky behaviors that make him all the more lovable, such as nickering when riders take their feet out of the stirrups!   We look forward to working with Que for many years to come!

Staff Member of the Month
Colleen Orso

Colleen is the newest therapist to join our team; she started with us at the beginning of the year.  She quickly became a great member of the team; it's almost like she has been with us for years!  Prior to starting treating with us, Colleen spent some time volunteering with our therapists to get comfortable with our facility and horses.  She also took the Level I treatment principles course through the American Hippotherapy Association at the same time as our occupational therapy, Susan.

During the week, Colleen works as a physical therapist for The Phoenix Center, a special needs school in Nutley, New Jersey.  Colleen has been a great addition to our team!

Hero of the Month
The Kid's Wish Network

The Kid's Wish Network chose Rebecca as the Hero of the Month in August 2013.  Rebecca started coming to work with Kathy in July 2012 to better control her emotions, focusing specifically on her anxiety.  Since coming to us, Rebecca has improved her self-awareness.

When she turned 14, Rebecca started volunteering with RHR.  She really enjoys working with all of horses, whether it be leading for sessions or riding Que.  Rebecca is truly an amazing part of the RHR team!

Volunteer of the Month
Georgia

Georgia is a high school student who started volunteering with us in November of 2016.  As a horseback rider herself, Georgia's knowledge and love of horses is invaluable to us.  She has been riding for many years, and currently rides at a local stable.  Georgia is great with the kids; she can always make them (and the staff) laugh!

In between sessions, Georgia enjoys cuddling with Tetley, her favorite Rocking Horse pony.  Georgia has become a great part of the team and we are so grateful to her for her commitment to RHR!
