Amazing Stories from
The 14th Annual Cup of Compassion Breakfast

Clara Reynolds
President & CEO
February 23rd marked our 14th Annual Cup of Compassion Breakfast.  It was my second one, and I have to tell you, it really moved me.  We featured two amazing individuals who were brave enough to tell how the Crisis Center impacted their lives.  I'm so inspired by them that I want to share their stories with you.

Mary Ann described herself as a doting, devoted grandmother to Arianna.  She enjoyed spoiling her the way all grandmothers do.  However, when Arianna's mother took her own life, Mary Ann's role changed from grandmother to mother.  In her role new role as parent, she recognized the trauma Arianna had experienced at the sudden loss of her mother.  She contacted the Crisis Center and enrolled Arianna in the Corbett Trauma Center's Stepped Care therapy program... "I'm Not Afraid Anymore" - Melissa's Story

The vibrant young woman thrived in a profession that allowed her to connect with people.

A stand-up comedian, Melissa was initially excited to be approached by a professional who claimed he could help her with her routine. When he invited Melissa to his apartment for pointers, he assured her she would be safe with him.

After they spent time talking about her career, the night unexpectedly adopted a darker, more frightening tone.

The man sexually assaulted Melissa - and the 20-year-old felt the world around her shatter....

Starting the Day with a Cup of Compassion

Scott DeThomas Delivers the Keynote Speech at Cup of Compassion
The early morning hour and rainy driving conditions did nothing to deter more than 500 people from gathering at the Tampa Convention Center on February 23 to support the Crisis Center in its important mission:

To ensure that no one in our community has to face crisis alone.

The 2017 Cup of Compassion was a heart-warming event - and a tremendous success.

Brendan McLaughlin served as emcee for the event.  Speakers included Crisis Center CEO Clara Reynolds and Board Chair Tanya Hillary; Kevin Bakewell of AAA - The Auto Club Group;  keynote speaker Scott DeThomas of GTE Financial; and Melissa Nicholas, a rape survivor who shared how she was helped by the Crisis Center.

Going the Distance: Strokes for Hope

On Saturday April 1, Crisis Center of Tampa Bay CEO Clara Reynolds, Board Vice Chair Jamie Klingman and several friends will gear up and go the distance for the Crisis Center! They'll jump into Hillsborough Bay for a 6.2-mile open-water swim around Davis Islands to raise funds and awareness for the organization.

You can thank them for their efforts by making a Strokes for Hope donation to the Crisis Center by clicking HERE.

Want to cheer them on in person? The start/finish line is at the Sail Pavilion next to the Tampa Convention Center. The swim begins at 8am and should be finished by 11:30am.

Women In Action Share Their Heart for Valentine's Day

Members of Women In Action recently made Valentine's Day a little sweeter for local shut-ins. Members attended a card signing party at GulfShore Bank to make handwritten cards to send to people who are in the Crisis Center's Telephone Reassurance program.

Telephone Reassurance assures people who are confined to their homes receive daily "safety check" phone calls from Crisis Center volunteers. For many of these people, the volunteer could be the only person they speak to that day. The program helps these individuals feel less isolated and more connected.

Women in Action brings together community minded women who support the mission of the Crisis Center. The group meets throughout the year for quarterly lunch and learns, volunteer activities, and social experiences.

Special thanks for Barbara Curts for hosting and for providing the wine and cheese that made the card signing party even more enjoyable!
