#HurricaneStrong Home Featured at Lightning Conference
According to the National Weather Service, lightning strikes the United States approximately 25 million times a year, and a typical strike can contain one-hundred million volts of electricity. Lightning strikes to unprotected structures can cause injury, deaths, fire, and destroy buildings.
As part of the FLASH partnership with the
Lightning Protection Institute
(LPI) and our shared goal to build lightning safe communities, FLASH Senior Vice President of Education and Technical Programs Mike Rimoldi delivered an update on the
#HurricaneStrong Home
rebuild project in Breezy Point, N.Y. at the ULPA/LPI Annual Conference. The #HurricaneStrong Home features mitigation products, including a lightning protection system supplied and installed by LPI members.

Institute for Business and Home Safety
(IBHS) FORTIFIED Home™ training program at the IBHS Research Center in Richburg, S.C. during February. The two-day program covered the FORTIFIED certification program and detailed how to evaluate homes at three different levels-Bronze, Silver, and Gold.

Southern California: QuakeSmart is Coming this Spring
Scientists estimate there is a 75 percent chance of a magnitude 7 or higher earthquake striking Southern California in the next 30 years. FLASH and partners are offering three QuakeSmart Preparedness Workshops t
o help businesses and nonprofit organizations address this risk.
The first session will be April 18 in Rancho Mirage. It will feature Dr. Dennis Mileti, professor emeritus at the University of Colorado, where he served as director of the Natural Hazards Center. The Center is the United States' clearinghouse for social and behavioral science research related to hazards and disasters.

Deadline for Presentation Submissions Extended
Presenter Abstracts should focus on:
- Science - to support preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation;
- Policy - to advance resilience through strong building codes, smart finance, marketplace incentive programs, tax benefits, and innovation such as Big Data and smart home technology; and
- Practice - to include advocates, building and fire code officials, communicators, emergency managers, engineers, futurists, insurance professionals, journalists, leaders, merchants, meteorologists, product manufacturers, public officials, researchers, and scientists.

This month, FLASH had the honor of spending time with Dr. Ernst Kiesling, Research Professor at the National Wind Institute at Texas Tech University, and Founder and Executive Director of the National Storm Shelter Association (NSSA).
With a Ph.D. in Engineering from Michigan State University, Kiesling has a wealth of knowledge and experience in engineering safer outcomes for vulnerable populations. His 50 years of leadership and service in mitigation engineering is remarkable, not only for his long-standing dedication to the field and his students, but also - and most especially - for the conception, design, and development of tornado safe rooms.

FEMA Seeks Applicants for National Advisory Council
FEMA is requesting individuals who are interested in serving on the FEMA
National Advisory Council (NAC)
to apply to be considered for appointment. The NAC is a federal advisory committee established to ensure effective and ongoing coordination of federal preparedness, protection, response, recovery, and mitigation for natural disasters, acts of terrorism, and other man-made disasters.
The NAC is a geographically diverse mix of officials, emergency managers, and emergency response providers from state, local, and tribal governments, the private sector, and nongovernmental organizations who advise the FEMA Administrator on all aspects of emergency management.
