The Mehnga Sanghera Family Collaborative Learning Center Opens!

Joti (Sanghera) Culbertson '86, Max Culbertson '19, Raji Sanghera '87, Drew Moseley '19 holding a portrait of his grandfather Mehnga Sanghera, Robbie Moseley '19, Mrs. Athena Sanghera, and Melanie Sanghera '83.
On Wednesday, Garces held the blessing and dedication of the Mehnga Sanghera Family Collaborative Learning Center. Beginning last summer, the Garces library was gutted and rebuilt into a beautiful center for the students.  It took awhile to make it the technological center envisioned by the Sanghera's, Ms. Myka Peck, and everyone involved, but it was worth the wait. The Sanghera and Culbertson families were in attendance for the blessing along with some of their closest friends.  Msgr. Craig Harrison was here to bless the building.  He asked the students to remember to say a quick prayer for the Sanghera's each time they enter as a way to thank and honor them for making the center possible. Garces principal Myka Peck thanked the Sanghera's for making the center a reality.  She also thanked Jim McMurtrey (McMurtrey Lince Construction), John Pavletich (Pavletich Electric), and Philip McDermott (Sierra School Supply) for all they did to help turn the library into an interactive, technology based, collaborative learning center.  The new center has 10 Apple TVs, five Apple Mac computers, two quiet rooms for group discussions/meetings, an area set up for classroom presentations, and iPad chargers throughout.  The room is set up so that students can meet and work in small groups throughout the center.  They will also be able to obtain assistance for their iPads from the Genius Squad who will be present during break and lunch on a daily basis. Next time you are on campus, you are welcome stop by.

Message from
Msgr. Perry Kavookjian
Garces Rector

J.O.Y. is the theme for the Season of Lent here at Garces.  JOY begins with JESUS; continues with service to OTHERS and concludes with YOURSELF.

The Gospels lay out there ways that we can strengthen our spirituality especially during this Season of Lent. Amazingly, those three ways are linked to the theme of JOY.

Jesus said, "When you pray go into your room and pray to your Heavenly Father." Prayer brings us JOY as we begin to experience closeness to the Lord himself. Being united with Christ allows us to experience the JOY of having a relationship with our God!

Jesus also said, "When you give alms to the poor, do it in secret, and do not let your right hand know what your left hand is doing."  Practicing charity towards the poor and needy in a quiet way brings us JOY as we recognize that the good we are doing for others is valued and blessed by God. Having concern for the needs of others over our own needs brings a deep joy to our hearts and souls as we recognize that we are actually ministering to those for whom God has a special love.

Finally, Jesus teaches, "When you are fasting, don't look gloomy. Wash your face and anoint your head." Practicing self-denial (giving up something for Lent) is not meant to be a cause of sadness but a cause for JOY as we strengthen our bodies to resist temptation so that they might better serve God and neighbor.

So, practice a little JOY this Lent! Prayer, charity and self-denial will help us fulfill the Great Commandment to "love your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength."

Msgr Perry
