Heart Health Surveys

We have been noticing an increase in incorrect answers on the Heart Health post-session participant surveys. Not only does this affect our goals for grant reporting, but it means participants are not understanding some of the main session concepts.

Please make sure you're addressing the survey answers in your talking points, specifically related to:
  • Ideal waist circumference measurement
  • Ideal blood pressure measurement
  • Where and how to get an accurate blood pressure reading in the community
GRAPEVINE UPDATES
Post-session Survey Reminder
Thank you for continuing to adjust to some of the changes we've made this year. Just a friendly reminder to leave enough time at the end of your sessions for surveys, and to make sure to collect them. This helps us with our reporting and program analysis.

Some helpful ideas nurses have shared:
    • Add a final slide to the PowerPoint about surveys as a reminder to yourself and participants.
    • Wait to hand out the incentive (if not a part of the session itself). Trade the incentive for a completed survey.
GrapeVine Spanish Outreach

In February, two GrapeVine nurses, Heidi Anderson and Rosa Gomez, partnered with Casa Guadalupe in West Bend to present our Heart Health unit in Spanish. They offered healthy snacks, free blood pressure screenings, and valuable information to a population, who has a higher risk of developing heart disease.

The pair have several other Spanish sessions planned, including Bone Health, Oral Health, and Healthy Aging Brain. We thank them for their efforts in reaching out to more women and families across the state. A goal for 2017 is to have additional GrapeVine sessions translated in order to continue outreach to Spanish speakers.
American Diabetes Association Alert Day®
March 28th is American Diabetes Association Alert Day®, an encouragement for everyone to know their risk for Type 2 Diabetes and to learn more about reducing that risk. A copy of the risk assessment is attached in both English and Spanish versions.

A   free toolkit is also available with ideas and resources for your community.
Breast Cancer "Sister Pact"
pink_ribbon.jpg The Wisconsin Breast Cancer Task Force started a media campaign called "Sister Pact" to encourage women to make a commitment to address their breast health. The awareness program helps women get information on mammography and connect with local resources, specifically in Milwaukee, which is identified as a breast cancer "hot spot".

GRAPEVINE PARTNER FEATURE:  Ardyce McMillen

During the winter months, Ardyce McMillen may take a break from the Wisconsin weather by heading to Alamo, Texas, but that doesn't stop her from keeping up with GrapeVine. For the last four years, she has been leading GrapeVine sessions in Texas- most recently presenting Heart Health to a group of more than 30 people.

Ardyce explains that the residents within her community are all 55 years of age or older and have a variety of health concerns. Heart disease and diabetes are of special concern, so presenting the Heart Health unit just made sense. "The sessions provide information to help with questions and address the needs of the community. Much of it was information they had never heard about before".

Ardyce doesn't think she does anything out of the ordinary with her sessions, saying, "It's important to learn wherever you are". But you never know who you will be reaching out to and how that information will be shared. In Ardyce's example, her session attendees originally are from all over, including Canada! We want to thank Ardyce for her dedication to health education and for
all our GrapeVine partners for their outreach and impact.
Want to be featured in the next GV e-newsletter? Send your session stories and pictures to Nora at [email protected]. We'd love to hear and share what you've been up to!
