THE CASE MANAGER'S CORNER
The Case Manager as Liaison between the Injured Workers, Physicians and Employers
By Anne Llewellyn, RN-BC, MS, BHSA, CCM, CRRN
Case managers are integral members of the healthcare team. They are liaisons between the patient, the healthcare team, the payer and the employer. This is especially true in the area of workers compensation.
Workers compensation case managers work with the injured worker by coordinating care and educating and empowering the injured worker to understand their condition and ensure they take an active role in developing the plan of care to meet their individual needs. Doing so increases the likelihood they will return to gainful employment.
The case manager also works with the treating physician. By obtaining specific information of the injured worker's job and its demands, the case manager helps the treating physician determine when the worker can return to work, and what limitations to apply.
By gathering these details, the case manager is able to give the healthcare team all the information it needs to better understand the job-related duties the worker will need to perform, determine if he/she can perform those duties with the physical restrictions, and plan what can be done medically to help expedite the injured worker's return to the job. The case manager's input helps the physician decide if additional therapy or other medical care is needed.
Finally, the case manager also works with the employer to help him understand the injured employee's situation and the limitations he/she may have. Doing so allows the employer to be part of the return to work plan. If the employer cannot accommodate the injured worker with a medically suitable job, the case manager can look for alternative options, such as calling in a vocational counselor to determine if there are transferable skills that will allow the injured worker to seek viable work elsewhere.
By developing a caring relationship with the injured worker, the treating physician and the employer, many challenges and possible roadblocks can be avoided or minimized and allow a positive outcome.
Dark CHOCOLATE is always a good idea!
There's a reason why people LOVE chocolate...a good reason!

fancy-chocolates.jpg
Everyone loves good chocolate, but have you ever wondered why? What is it about chocolate that has made it a "cure for all ills" in almost every culture for over 1,000 years?
For starters, dark chocolate is higher in the mineral magnesium than any other food except for seaweed like dulse. Magnesium, one of the most abundant minerals in the body, is involved in more than 300 chemical reactions in your body, particularly in the metabolic process that converts food to energy. Magnesium is necessary for muscles and nerves to function correctly; this has huge significance for our hearts.
When selecting chocolate, look for higher cacao and lower sugar content. In general, the darker the chocolate, the higher the cacao content. However, since cacao is bitter, the higher the percentage cacao, the more bitter it is. Polyphenols, which are responsible for many of dark chocolate's health benefits, are also what make chocolate bitter.
However, most chocolate is sweetened, so it's a matter of balancing nutritional benefit with palatability. For health benefits, choose chocolate with a cacao percentage of 70% or higher.
Swiss scientists found that when highly anxious people ate an ounce and a half of dark chocolate every day for two weeks, their stress hormone levels were significantly reduced. That works for all of us!
