Children's Week
March 13-16
"There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children." - Nelson Mandela, Former President of South Africa

We need your support with the  Breastfeeding Bill  and its upcoming hearing on 2/27/17.  The bill keeps the nursing accommodations provisions of the Affordable Care Act - in case it is repealed/replace - and extends these provisions to public agencies - except for employees of the department of corrections.  We are looking for people to attend the hearing in support and to write letters of support.  For more information, contact Jared Busker, Policy Analyst with Children's Advocacy Alliance, jared.busker@caanv.org or  go to CAANV website here.

Children's Week at the Legislature is an event organized by the Nevada Institute for Children's Research and Policy at UNLV and the Children's Advocacy Alliance.  This year the week-long event will be held March 13-16 in Room 3100 of the Legislative Building in Carson City.  The goal of the week is to provide information and education about issues important for children and families to legislators and their staff as well as involve families and other advocates in the legislative process.
Each day of the week as a different topical focus and we will have speakers and a buffet breakfast and lunch each day during these brief specialty presentations.  We will also have schedules of all the hearings for the week as well as bills being heard in those hearings.  This is an excellent opportunity for Coalition members to learn more about the legislative process, meet their representatives and advocate for those issues that are so crucial for the children and families in Nevada.  In addition to this event NICRP and CAA also track all children's bills at the NICRP websit so you can follow them and participate in the process.

The schedule for each day of Children's Week 2017 is listed below and for more information you can go to our designated Children's Week website or call Amanda Haboush-Deloye with NICRP at 702-895-1040, or Denise Tanata with CAA at 702-228-1869.

 MCH News & Updates

As part of our ongoing work to improve continuity of coverage and care for pregnant women and new mothers, the AMCHP Health Reform Implementation team has created a short, consumer-facing animated video about the importance of accessing oral health care during pregnancy. This informative, high-quality video can be a useful tool to help educate women about the safety and importance of going to the dentist while pregnant.

Nevada participates in the Pregnancy Mortality Surveillance System (PMSS) by submitting maternal mortality data to the PMSS team at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The data includes maternal deaths with an ICD-10 Chapter O code and causes of death among women who were pregnant or were within one year of pregnancy and identified using a pregnancy "check-box" on the death certificate.  CDC uses the PMSS information to determine the cause and time of death related to the pregnancy. CDC defines pregnancy-related deaths as the death of a woman while pregnant or within 1 year of pregnancy termination-regardless of the duration or site of the pregnancy-from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management, but not from accidental or incidental causes. CDC periodically releases PMSS data through various channels such as peer-reviewed literature, CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reports, and the CDC website.

Interested parties can view the most recent MM report that was presented at the November 2016 Maternal and Child Health Advisory Board (MCHAB) meeting and it posted on OPHIE's webpage, it's the first link titled "Maternal Mortality 2003 to 2014."

Increasing Adolescent Access to Health Coverage
and Health Care
On November 3, 2016, Nevada state officials and experts gathered in Carson City, Nevada to discuss how the state can most effectively increase access to health coverage and health care for adolescents between the ages of 15- 18 years. Special attention was paid towards strategies serving currently uninsured and uninsurable populations such as individuals who are undocumented. Two key goals emerged with regards to adolescent coverage and care:

Goal 1: Reduce the percent of uninsured adolescents, ages 15-18 years, from the current rate, 8% to the national average, 5%.
Goal 2: Increase utilization of health services by adolescents, ages 15-18 years, for wellness visits to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services benchmark levels.

If you would like additional information about this project and/or would like to know about possible upcoming meetings in which this plan will be discussed, including plans for implementing activities, please reach out to Eileen Hough, Adolescent Health and Wellness Coordinator, ehough@health.nv.gov, and your contact information will be placed on a distribution list.
