In Defense of Food
Sunday, February 12, 2017
4:00 PM
Unitarian Universalist Church
3 1/2 East Main Street, Canton

As part of Canton's Winterfest, GardenShare and the Potsdam Food Co-op are co-sponsoring this showing of In Defense of Food based on Michael Pollan's book, T he Omnivore's Dilemma. Popcorn and soda spritzers supplied by the Potsdam Food Co-op will be available.

The documentary will be followed by an informal discussion with food experts from the St. Lawrence County community on the local food movement. Information on ways you can get involved with food system and anti-hunger initiatives locally will be available. This event is free to the public and everyone is welcome to attend!

In Defense of Food tackles a question more and more people around the world have been asking: What should I eat to be healthy? Celebrated US author and lecturer, Michael Pollan distills a career's worth of reporting into a prescription for reversing the damage being done to people's health by today's industrially driven Western diet. In Defense of Food debunks the daily media barrage of conflicting claims about nutrition. Traveling the globe and exploring the supermarket aisles to illustrate the principles of his bestselling "eater's manifesto," Pollan explores how the modern diet has been making us sick and what we can do to change it.

Socrates once said, "I know nothing except the fact of my ignorance." It's safe to say Socrates was selling himself short with that statement, and yet how often, when asked to play a trivia game, have you or someone you know backed out with a statement like "Oh, I don't know anything. There are so many people who are smarter than me!"

Chances are, like Socrates, you are smarter than you give yourself credit for. So don't let lack of confidence stop you from joining us at GardenShare's Cabin Fever Trivia Night on March 18 at the Potsdam Elks Club.

Tony Lynn from THE WOLF 95.3 FM is stepping in again this year as our MC. We'll test your knowledge on local North Country trivia - you got this! You can win prizes! You can enjoy the cash bar! You can go home with bragging rights and the title of "GardenShare's smartest supporter!" But most important, you can have fun with friends and community members while supporting GardenShare.  Teams of four can  register here or by calling the GardenShare office at 315-261-8054.

So spread the word, sign up soon before the event sells out, and get ready to ring in spring and exercise your brain!
News in Brief

February 24 is National CSA Sign-Up Day!  Watch for our director in an early morning appearance on Channel 7 and go here for a list of CSA's in the area.  Signing up early is a big help to the farmers as they plan for the growing season ahead!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service - GardenShare and SLU Campus Kitchens sponsored a food drive to benefit the Potsdam Snack Packs program and the Canton Golden Bear Packs program.  We were thrilled to collect about 1000 individual items of food for each of these important programs!   T hank you to volunteers April, Brianna, and Cooper Grant, Cathy Carr, Anneke Larrance, and Carol Pynchon  for coming out and helping us make it "a day on, not a day off." Thanks also to SLU students who helped sort through the Canton donations. And most important, thanks to everyone who generously donated to the food drive!

Save the date - For GardenShare's fundraising dinner and auction at Jake's on the Water - June 6, 2017 - and watch for more details.   Want to help plan the event?   Get in touch !
