Can You Hear Me Now?

A Note From Pastor Linda

"Lord, teach us to pray..."  ~Luke 11

"To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing." ~Martin Luther

"I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer."  ~Martin Luther

Roughly 60 percent of Americans claim they pray daily.  Another nearly 20 percent claim to pray weekly.  Others claim that they have no idea even where to begin when it comes to prayer.  That's A LOT of prayer!  Can you hear me now?

The 12 disciples spent three years hanging out with Jesus.  They watched Him, traveled with Him, listened to Him teach and preach.  I find it interesting that nowhere in scripture is it recorded that the disciples ever asked Jesus, "Lord, teach us to teach."  And not once was it recorded, "Lord, teach us to do miracles."  As far as we know, the disciples' only direct request for instruction was, "Lord, teach us to pray."  Exposed to Jesus 24/7, they concluded that the one thing they needed to figure out was PRAYER.

To this end, Jesus taught them a model for prayer that we call The Lord's Prayer (found in Luke 11 and Matthew 6).  On Wednesday worship during the Season of Lent (12noon and 6pm)- we are having "Conversations with God"- using the Lord's Prayer as model for prayer.

Martin Luther suggested that as Christians we cannot live without prayer- it is as important as the air we breathe.  Our failure to pray rarely rises from lack of technique or subject matter.  No, we often fail at prayer simply because we do not keep at it.  We get distracted- we run out of time- we fall asleep.  Just as we cannot afford to stop pulling air into our lungs, so we also cannot survive (or certainly thrive!) spiritually without the healthy respiration of prayer.  Jesus gives us words to use and a model to follow but also be assured that when we fail:  "In our weakness, God's Spirit is right alongside helping us along.  If we don't know how or what to pray, it doesn't matter.  The Spirit does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of wordless sighs and our aching groans."  (Romans 8- The Message)

This is certainly GOOD NEWS for God's people!

See you in church!

Thank you for the consistent giving to Hosanna- to the General Fund, The Capital Projects Account(CPA) and the many other giving opportunities including Feed My Starving Children and the Youth Mission Trip.  Because of YOU we are actively living and loving and serving- making a difference in our church, our community and beyond.  If you currently give to both General Fund and CPA by check, it would help our weekly counters if separate checks could be written.  Thanks again, for your GENEROSITY!
