CHIA Board Update
Keeping our Mission Statement Front and Center
to Achieve Our True North
Authored By: Deborah Collier, RHIA; CHIA President 2015-17

CHIA Mission Statement
The mission of the California Health Information Association is to advance the management of health information through networking, education, shared knowledge, and advocacy.

True North is defined as evidence that every decision of an organization is completely aligned with its mission. This is precisely what the CHIA Board of Directors has been busy focusing on. Each decision point or proposed plan is aligned with CHIA's mission as well as CHIA's strategic plan and goals. Each CHIA Board meeting begins with review of CHIA's mission, vision, and core values and a report out of any event or activity that a board member was involved in that supports the mission of CHIA. This helps CHIA's leadership continue to direct CHIA for the current and desired goal of meeting the needs of CHIA's members and professional growth.

On behalf of the CHIA Board of Directors, an overview on the status of several of CHIA's mission and strategic plan related-decisions can be reviewed online here. The CHIA Board will continue to provide updates to CHIA Members - Stay Tuned.

Aspects of 21st Century Cures Act Require Cooperation from New HHS Secretary
By Mary Butler, Journal of AHIMA; Feb 22, 2017

Some elements of the 21st Century Cures Act are considered by some in the health IT community to be hard to implement, while other provisions face uncertainty with a new administration. Acting National Coordinator for Health IT Jon White, MD addressed both issues recently at joint meeting of the Health IT Policy and Standards Committees, over a week ago, and the at an Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) town hall meeting this week on Monday at the Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference.

One sticking point for members of the Health IT Policy and Standards Committees relates to the information blocking parts of the law. Sections 4002 and 4004 levels penalties as high as $1 million to vendors or entities that engage in information blocking, which can include activities such as: "preventing or materially discouraging access, exchanging or using of electronic health information."
EHRs are Everywhere: Now What?
By: Bill Siwicki; Feb 6, 2017

Since meaningful use incentivized what has become near-ubiquity of electronic health records, hospitals and providers are looking at what they can do on top of the digitized platform.

"The EHR market has commoditized now and the healthcare domain is coming into an era where most other domains, like the financial domain, have been for a long time - understanding risk, identifying and mitigating risk, and finding tools to do so," said Fred Rahmanian, chief technology officer at Geneia, a vendor of population health, remote patient monitoring and analytics systems. "One reason people will see a lot of activity here is because of the ability to ingest a lot of data and extract insights from that data. Healthcare analytics is front and center now."

Healthcare organizations must understand the massive troves of data they're sitting on to best function in the burgeoning value-based care market.
