A GUIDE TO BETTER PASSWORDS

Passwords are, in many cases, your last line of defense in your online world. Email, online banking, even your Facebook account - your online data is a precious commodity to hackers. Many of us (41%) simply use a password that is easy to remember, and a remarkable 45% of us use the same password for most, or even all, of our login accounts. This may be easier, but it's risky.

How does your password become compromised? A brute-force attack is a common method, which is an automated, systematic attempt of all possible passphrases until successful. (Basically, a computer guesses... a lot!) Or among numerous other possibilities, someone you know may have a strong hunch what you would use. So the more  un complicated your password, the easier it is to break.

Survey results show that 39% of online adults have a hard time keeping track of their passwords, with 56% simply writing them down on a piece of paper. So don't feel bad if this is you... you're not alone! With this in mind, security is still a concern and we should be mindful. Here are some basic steps you can take to make a difference:
  • Create strong passwords and change them at regular intervals. Use random upper and lower-case letters (not full words), and mix in numbers and special characters like $, %, !, etc.
  • Use a different password for every account. I know this may be hard to do, but the next step can help...
  • Get a password manager. This is a piece of software that will store all your passwords for easy retrieval. Best of all, many are free!
  • Take advantage of extra account security features such as verifying your phone number via text message code. This added layer of protection can save your account!
This all may sound more difficult, but from personal experience, I can attest that it gets easier to manage once implemented. (In the past, I used the same password everywhere, too!) If you have any questions about anything in this article, or something else technical in nature, I would be glad to receive an email or phone call from you anytime! Please write to [email protected] or call 1-800-668-5313. I'm here to help.

Training and Programs

Emerit Helps People Get to Work

For over twenty years, Emerit has helped organisations and programs serving new Canadians, refugees, Indigenous peoples, people with disabilities, at-risk youth and others facing barriers to entering the workforce gain the skills and confidence they need to find and keep meaningful employment, improve their lives and contribute to their communities. Training, certification, and labour market intelligence from Emerit are excellent resources for agencies and organizations focused on preparing individuals for employment.

Emerit's Workplace Essentials and Canadian Workplace Essentials are focused on developing the transferable skills, or "soft skills", necessary to be successful in any career. They provide insight into typical Canadian workplace culture and what is expected of an employee and help them meet industry standards in areas including professionalism, working with others, communication, critical thinking and customer service.

In addition, occupation-specific training and professional certification is available for many professions and trades that are suitable for entry level candidates. This training is available in English or French, online or as paper workbooks, and gives the learner the skills and knowledge required to be successful in the occupation through realistic examples and activities. Certification provides industry recognition of the skills and knowledge demonstrated by the learner in their occupation.

These occupations provide the starting point for many careers, and the experience they provide can often lead to advancement within the industry.

For specific program needs, Emerit has the expertise and experience to provide customized training content and to license use of relevant existing training material from our extensive training library.

Labour Market Intelligence   from Emerit benefits serving agencies by providing accurate data on the current and future state of the tourism labour market.

Knowing where shortages are occurring or are expected, and which occupations are affected, and typical levels of compensation and benefits by job type and location can assist agencies with career planning and job placement activities. This data is available as full reports, summary reports or can be customized to provide specific information requested by an organization.

We've been serving the printing needs of our clients for over 30 years in the New Brunswick area and beyond. Even though we've expanded over the years, we still think of ourselves as a family-run business focused on developing successful relationships, one customer at a time.
Over the years we have improved our ways in which we can service our clients from Commercial Printing to advanced Security Printing. This has opened up new markets for us and helped Rainbow become the only Certified Cheque Printer in Atlantic Canada.
We are always looking for ways to improve our ability to service our clients, either by upgrading our technology, communicating better with clients and even offering online ordering options. Making it easy to place orders and/or contact us on the go. We can't wait to help you with your printing project today.

Tourism Tips

More tax savings!!!!

Did you know the cost associated with TIANB's Summit may be tax deductible? The Income Tax Act (ITA) states that you may deduct the costs of two conventions in any one year. The conventions must be related to your business and located where the sponsor conducts its business. Since beverages, food or entertainment are included in the Summit price, you would be required to deduct $50.00 a day for these expenses from your claim for the registration fee, where  the 50% rule applies to these type of expenses.

Let's illustrate this with an example. Shelley attended a two day TIANB Summit that cost her $265.00. The amount for meals and entertainment was not itemized. Shelley's convention expense would be $165.00 ($265.00 - 50x2).  Shelley can also claim a meal and entertainment expense of $50.00 (50x2x50%).

You should be able to prove your attendance to TIANB's Summit and support this expense with an invoice from TIANB to benefit from this tax savings.

Save, Save, Save!

Did you know?

If you do not file your return on time your goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (including any related provincial credits), Canada child benefit payments (including related provincial payments), and old age security benefit payments may be delayed or stopped...  Also, CRA may charge interest and late-filing penalties, and this could be a significant amount depending on the balance owing.

Interest

If you have a balance owing for 2016, CRA will charge compound daily interest starting May 1, 2017, on any unpaid amounts owing for 2016. This includes any balance owing if CRA reassess your return. In addition, CRA will charge you interest on the penalties starting the day after your return is due. The rate of interest CRA charges can change every three months based on the fluctuation of prescribed interest rates.

Also, if you have amounts owing from previous years, CRA will continue to charge compound daily interest on those amounts. Payments you make are first applied to amounts owing from previous years.

Late-filing penalty

If you owe tax for 2016 and do not file your return for 2016 on time, CRA will charge you a late-filing penalty. The penalty is 5% of your 2016 balance owing, plus 1% of your balance owing for each full month your return is late, to a maximum of 12 months.

In addition, if CRA charged a late-filing penalty on your return for 2013, 2014, or 2015 your late-filing penalty for 2016 may be 10% of your 2016 balance owing, plus 2% of your 2016 balance owing for each full month your return is late, to a maximum of 20 months. This could easily add up to a significant amount, if you have a balance owing.

Strategy to consider:

Due to cash flows constraints, if you cannot pay your full balance owing on or before  the due date, you can avoid the late-filing penalty by filing your return on time.
