Black History Month
Profiles in Greatness
Dorothy I. Height
Dorothy I. Height was a renowned civil rights leader and a vital force in the struggle for human rights and equality in the United States. She was also a proud social worker who earned her graduate degree at New York University. Height worked with Dr. Marin Luther King, Whitney H. Young, Roy Wilkins and others during the Civil Rights Movement. Some of her accomplishments include being appointed leader of the United Christian Youth Movement of North America in 1933 and being elected President of the National Council of Negro Women (1957-1998).
Height fought for civil rights her entire life and
served as a mentor to many of the most recognizable female leaders today including former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. Her work earned her innumerable accolades including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, awarded by President Bill Clinton, and NASW's 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award.
Dorothy Height, who died in 2010, was called "the godmother of the Civil Rights Movement" by President Barack Obama. On February 1, 2017, the United States Postal Service kicked off Black History month with the issuance of the Dorothy Height Forever stamp honoring her civil rights legacy.

Social Work Month is March 2017 Social Workers Stand Up!
NASW will launch a "Social Workers Stand Up" campaign during Social Work Month in March 2017. The campaign will focus on educating the public about how social workers stand up for others, including some of the most vulnerable people in our society, and make positive contributions to society. The campaign will also highlight the importance of the social work title, and why getting the assistance of an educated and licensed social worker is so important. Look for more details about the campaign to be posted
