HISTORY ON THE BRICKS, FORT WORTH STOCKYARDS
|
|
|
Courtesy of The North Fort Worth Historical Society(Feeders and Breeders Show (Stock Show) 1910.) |
During the early years the Stockyards area was not part of the Fort Worth city limits. In 1902 it was incorporated and became North Fort Worth. Then in 1911 it was incorporated again as Niles City until August of 1923 when it was annexed by the city of Fort Worth.
Although they had the investors and the business expertise of Simpson, Niles and others, they struggled with their company for nearly a decade. The economic panic of 1893 and the Texas cattlemen's distrust of eastern outsiders hurt their business. The ranchers preferred to ship their cattle to Kansas City and St. Louis. Simpson decided to attend the convention of the Cattle Raisers of Texas (now the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association) and urged the cattlemen to ship to Fort Worth. He also promised to pay fifty cents per head more than what they could get in Kansas City.
It was during this time that C.C. French, public relations expert for the stockyards, ran into rancher, Charles McFarland of Weatherford, Texas. While the two men were discussing the hard times of the Fort Worth Stockyards Company, McFarland suggested having a fat stock show. French reasoned that at this time they were not getting any fat stock in the yards. McFarland assured French that he could convince his friends to bring in their stock and he would bring some of his own. It was on that day that the Fort Worth Fat Stock Show was born. Ranchers from all around, including Samuel Burk Burnett, Marion Sansom, J.W. Burgess and many others agreed to participate. The stockyards officials and ranchers decided the first stock show should be held in early March 1896.
The Stock Show, also known as The Feeders and Breeders Show, was held in the Fort Worth Stockyards until 1942 when a flood devastated the Stockyards area. Then in 1943, during WWII, the Livestock Exhibits Building, which is now Billy Bob's Texas, was used to assemble airplanes. The following year the Stock Show was moved to the new Will Rogers Memorial Complex on the West side of Fort Worth.

The Stockyards are a wonderful recognition of Cattlemen and Cowboys steeped in the tradition
of the American West; a place today doing primarily the same thing we were doing over 100 years ago.
Cattle drives, rodeo, steam train, honky tonks, great places to shop and eat and more.
Thank you for taking the time to support our history and culture.
Sincerely,
Fort Worth Stockyards
National Historic District
