With Main Street Iowa and the Iowa Economic Development Authority, DPI presents the Open 4 Business competition for either a new or expanding for-profit business locating in downtown Burlington. Three chosen local applicants will pitch their business concepts to DPI, with the winner going on to one of the regional competitions in June for a chance at $8,000. Those finalists will present their ideas in a statewide contest in August for an additional $20,000 in funding. What: Save $10 off booth fee by signing up before April 30; $30 for a 20 x 18 booth, $40 beginning May 1. We are specifically looking for antique and vintage merchandise (either in its original condition or repurposed), architectural salvage, food, handmade items that fit the vintage theme. To qualify, items should either consist largely of vintage materials, or a significant amount of the components should be made by the vendor. Please note -  for jewelry vendors, buying mass produced beads and stringing them is not enough. Vendors will be selected specially for the quality, style and charm of their items.

What:  Training provides an overview on recognizing and preventing hazards in the workplace. Participants learn how to identify, abate, avoid and prevent job related hazards on a job site. Training covers general industry safety and health hazards a worker may encounter, including, but not limited to: intro to OSHA; walking and working surfaces; exit routes, emergency action plans, fire prevention plans, and fire protection; PPE; hazardous communication; and electrical. Participants learn about employer responsibilities and worker rights.
