EdExplore 2016/2017: Looking Back, Looking Ahead

The 2016-2017 school year has been a busy one for EdExploreSRQ. In this month's VLOG, EdExploreSRQ manager Angela Hartvigsen takes a look back at what we've accomplished already this year and what we still have in store. Don't miss this quick 4:00 rundown on what's happening with EdExploreSRQ!
Academy Award-winning Film Exploration for Grades 6-12

Politics, drama and comedy intermingle in Asolo Repertory Theatre's upcoming production of the 1950s Broadway hit and Academy Award-winning film, "Born Yesterday." And they have turned it into an Exploration that is perfect for middle school and high school students and teachers interested in theatre, language arts and social studies. Matinee productions are being offered on March 21 and 28 at a cost of just $10/student, which includes an in-class preparatory workshop.

In addition to "Born Yesterday," we have a number of other brand new and/or upcoming Explorations that you don't want to miss as well. Here are some of our most recent additions:
Teaching Artist Spotlight: Musician Bob Fieberts

How much can students learn from producing and playing a one-stringed instrument? Turns out, the answer is quite a lot. In his "Amigo One-Stringed Guitar Project" Exploration, internationally-recognized musician Bob Fieberts teaches 4th grade students how to create and play their own instruments made solely from a cookie tin, a piece of wood and a single string. This 5-day Exploration is a great way to engage young learners in the study of music, history, science and language arts.

Pine View Exploration Lends Hand to Sea Turtle Research

Sixth grade science students from Pine View took active learning to a new level as part of their recent "Turtle Tech" Exploration with Mote Marine Laboratory. In addition to learning about and analyzing sea turtle habitats and migration patterns, the students got to choose the name for one of the turtle nesting sites that Mote researchers will study this season. "Tortugas Pequenas" ("Little Sea Turtles") was the name chosen by the students. Inspired by their Exploration, the students also held a campus fundraising drive and collected $363 for sea turtle research, which they presented to researchers at Mote Marine during their visit.

Soaring to New Heights with Circus Arts Conservatory

Nearly 3,600 5th grade students from 27 elementary schools in Sarasota and Manatee counties recently attended "The Circus Science Machine" performances at The Circus Arts Conservatory. The performances, which were sponsored by the Circus Arts Conservatory and the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee's PAInT (Partnerships for Arts Integrated Teaching) program, brought to life lessons on physics, mechanics and mathematics that many of the students had been studying in their classrooms as part of EdExploreSRQ Explorations.
