Thank you, to the hundreds of people that attended the State of the City address today, and to our sponsors who helped make this a great success!

A few highlights from Mayor Abed, who began his address with a long list of achievements:
  • Last year, 560 net new businesses moved to Escondido. 
  • Westfield North County added a new 24 Hour Fitness Center, Black Angus, the California Pizza Kitchen, and will be adding an upscale movie theater. 
  • The City Council has approved the new Marriott Springhill Suites at La Terraza. 
  • "Innovate 78" was recently profiled by the San Diego Business Journal for bringing North County cities together to create a regional economy.
  • Sales Tax revenue has increased from $22 million in 2010 to a record $36 million today. 
Today, Escondido is leading in economic growth. The private sector confidence to invest in our city is stronger than ever. 

As my favorite President Reagan said: "Work and family are at the center of our lives, the foundation of our dignity as a free people. The Founding Fathers believed that faith in God was the key to our being a good people and America's becoming a great nation"

I will continue to honor your trust and lead our City with pride, thoughtfulness and passion. I am deeply committed to providing the American Dream for us and our families. Together, we will make Escondido one of the greatest cities in America!

During their closed session meeting today, the Escondido City Council received notification from current City Manager Graham Mitchell of his resignation, effective at the conclusion of the City Council meeting scheduled for  March 8, 2017 . 
 
The Escondido City Council appointed City Attorney Jeffrey Epp to serve as Interim City Manager while their recruitment process continues. Assistant City Attorney Michael McGuinness will serve as Interim City Attorney.
 
Formal action on these appointments is expected to occur at the March 1, 2017 City Council meeting. 

The Escondido Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs meeting on March 7th will host the newly appointed City Manager Jeff Epp.

  Assemblyman Rudy Salas null

Assembly members Marie Waldron (R-Escondido) and Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) this week announced legislation to provide more career opportunities to students and underprivileged Californians as part of the bipartisan "Better Jobs for a Better California" package.
Assembly Bill 316 will fund innovative technical career training and employment programs, support organizations to help disadvantaged Californians break through barriers to success to find work and fund nonprofit groups that help community college students graduate.

The  Escondido City Council said this week that curbing homelessness should be a top priority for the city in the coming year, after the number of people living on the streets in Escondido doubled between 2015 and 2016.
The council held its annual "action plan" workshop Wednesday to set priorities for the coming year, and homelessness was one of the few new issues to emerge. Other priorities - such as increasing sales tax revenues and attracting new businesses to the city - have been prominently featured in previous plans.
